BELONGING ESSAY
ʻA getting of wisdomʼ by Craig Ashby and ʻAnother brick in the wallʼ music video by Pink
Floyd both contrast various techniques which show belonging and emphasis a source of being a part of something but also being challenged and going through hardships before getting there. Society distinctively shows that the surroundings in the environment we are in can influence our actions or determine whether we belong or not.
In ʻA getting of wisdomʼ by Craig Ashby, he emphasises that his grandmother was a huge influence in his life however his friends and peers were also heavily influencing him due to the fact that they were rough, hardcore and rebellious. At the moment where Ashby moves to Walgett, he definitely feels left out and doesn't feel as if he fits in. Therefore he makes the decision to hang out with boys that are bad news for him and they heavily influence him to do the things they do for example, smoke pot and drink alcohol. Even though Ashby himself knows this is wrong because of his role model being his grandma and her positive influence on him, he still does the things his “friends” do because it helps him feel that he fits. He mentions that his “way of life had him headed to a jail cell in bathurst”. The was aware that his living standards and the way he was choosing to live his life was heading him towards the wrong direction because he was aware what him and his friends were getting up to was wrong. The quote “ i was a rough kid trying to live in a rough world” shows that he transformed to a rough kid, but not as rough as the other boys, and was trying to live the life that they were living. He found it difficult from the way he signifies that he was “trying” to live in the rough world. We know from this technique known as emotive language and it gives the reader a sense of knowing that he was trying hard to fit in and to feel apart of something. Hence these two quotes show how society has an impact on belonging and how it had
