Mandira Cooray Belief system paper There are many religions that are practiced in the modern world. These belief systems have developed many followers across different regions and as a result, have had made significant influence on culture. One major religion practiced in India is Hinduism. It was founded by the Aryan invaders of India. Another major religion practiced in the Middle East and South Asia is Islam. It was founded by Muhammad in Mecca, Arabia. Both Hinduism and Islam made significant influence on the cultures where they are practiced. Hinduism is a polytheistic religion. They believe in a fixed social class system known as the caste system. A Hindu is born into his caste and must remain in his caste a lifetime. Hindus believe that each caste has its own rules or dharma. It is a Hindu’s dharma to marry in his caste. Since Hindus believe in the caste system and dharma, there is restricted interaction among different caste members. As a result, there is no social mobility. People who do not belong to a caste are called untouchables. They receive poor treatment even today. Islam is a monotheistic religion. Muhammad preached a belief in one god. Muslims must pray five times a day facing the holy city of Mecca. The religion of Islam united the Muslims with its beliefs in one god, pilgrimage to mecca, the Arabic language and the Koran , which is the holy book of Islam. Sharia law is also practiced in Muslim nations such as Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Muslims cannot drink alcohol or eat pork. The Muslim women also wear a hijab, which is a head scarf. Ultimately, Both Hinduism and Islam created many cultural changes on the societies in which they are practiced. There is restricted interaction between caste members in Hinduism.
