In my time as a student I have written many essays, and I finish them most in about an hour, at least the ones were my phone is not involved. This essay took me all weekend. Not because it was challenging but because every five minutes I stopped typing and checked Instagram. I believe that technology is distracting students in a very powerful yet subtle way. The urge to use technology in class is affecting students by taking up their attention. So many outside distractions make it hard for the teacher to compete with social media for the student’s attention. The worst part might be that students don’t see the effect that technology is having on their attention spans. They don’t see technology as a roadblock for education. People might say that technology enhances education because it gives more information faster, and that is true except for the fact that students are misusing the power of technology by going off track and essentially missing the lesson being taught.…

In recent discussions of A Reunion With Boredom, a controversial issue has been whether teens get bored with electronics or if it is our choice to be bored. On the one hand, teens have a whole range of things to do on computers ranging from social media to reading to drawing. From this perspective, I do not agree with teens who get bored with electronics. On the other hand, however, it is our choice if we get bored or not. Another important reason why it is useful for students to use their smart phone at school is by the internet connectivity. By using this feature, they can have access to a large range of websites found in the online world. Many students are less interested in what the teacher tries to teach and are tempted to check their email or Facebook accounts during classes or while lectures. This is the main reason why teachers and authorities discourage the use of smart phones in schools. The actual reason being the teachers not able…

In fact, the average time spent with screen media among 8- to 18-year-olds is more than twice the average amount of time spent in school each year (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2010; National Center for Education Statistics, 2007– 2008). On average, American children between the ages of 8 and 18 spend more than 7½ hours a day using media for fun: everything from watching TV to listening to music, playing video games, and using social networking sites.
