At least once in our lives we have all felt like outcasts to a group of people, feeling different or rejected by society. The characters in Poker Flat felt this same exact way, but for them it was a case of life or death for being an outcast. Characters in the story “The Outcasts of Poker Flat” symbolize different types of people in society. Characters in the story represent different types of people in the society of the time period. Some of the characteristics are caregivers, manipulators, and leaders. Even though they show these traits, they are still being called “outcasts” and were executed for being different in the system.“Secret Committee had determined to rid the town of all improper persons” pg1.…
An archetype of an outsider is the person who is set up to experience something different of others. It could be used to help setup for the upcoming events. The outsider is portrayed differently to others. The characters in the story see the outsider as someone who is different. The readers see the outsider as someone who is there…
Many people in society can be considered by outsiders by society. These sorts of characters, along with being found in modern day society, are also found in all forms of media such as Scott Pilgrim in Scott Pilgrim Versus the World, Colonel Aureliano Buendia from One Hundred Years of Solitude, and even Doctor Gregory House from acclaimed television series House. These characters provide us with a fascinating viewpoint on how they view society and how they are able to interact with society as a result of this isolation and ostracism from society. Arguably one of the greatest examples of this isolated character challenged by society’s very moral center is the character of Meursault of Albert Camus’ The Stranger. Camus throughout The Stranger…
Sometimes we find ourselves walking down the street, staring at the homeless begging for money or watching unique people ‘embarrassing’ themselves when all they're doing is having fun. The diversity in the world is so vast, and we find ourselves pondering whether people are different or just outcasts. In many books as well, a character ends up being an outcast or a unique, different person as a whole. When are we outcasts and when are we just ‘different’ from the rest of the world? S.E. Hinton’s book The Outsiders represents this interesting situation where some people belong in the path of the status quo while others seem to stand out more than they fit in. Throughout the book, characters are shunned for being outcasts, honored for being unique, or even both.…
Being excluded in today’s society is one of the hardest things people can endure. In high school, hearing that one of your friends is having a get together without you can cause you great fear and distress. When events of this nature happen more often, people start to gain this fear of missing out, and it sometimes can cause people to become depressed. It is said that today, “some kids are pushed into a social ‘no man’s land’ by the exclusionary efforts of their peers. This isolation is itself a problem, as its victims can easily become disconnected from the moderating forces of mainstream society” (1). The same way that outcasts are pushed into a social “no man’s land” is the same way that Syme was pushed out by his peers and seen as a possible heretic. The social exclusion of outcasts in 1984 is very similar to the way outcasts are excluded and “socially vaporized” by teens…

The texts, Othello by William Shakespeare, Big World by Tim Winton and my visual appropriation, have enriched my understanding of the outsider through a variety of language and visual techniques. Through the portrayal of Othello and Roderigo in Othello, the author in Big World and the outsider in my visual appropriation, the authors have conveyed the notion that outsiders will forever and always be outsiders. No matter how hard the outsider tries to fit in or deny their otherness, at times seemingly part of the group, they will, in the end, still be considered an outsider.…
Curley's wife is one example of being an outcast. She is not included in anything because she is a woman and Curley keeps her away rom everyone else. It becomes very obvious that she is lonely and in need of someone to talk to because she goes out on the farm and goes to the bunkhouse. She looks for someone since Curley is not there with her and because she does that the workers call her nasty names like, tramp or tart. All she wants is someone to talk to and since her husband is not there to talk to her she goes out to bunkhouse to try and find someone. In the book it says,"... A girl was standing there looking in. She had full, rouged lips and widely spaced eyes, heavily made up... "I'm lookim' for Curley," she said... George looked away from her then looked back, " He was in here a minute ago but he went." "Oh!" She put her hands behind her back and leaned against the door frame so that her body was thrown forward. ... She turned her head,. "Hi, Slim", she said. Slim's voice came through the door. " Hi, Good-lookin'." "I'm tryin' to find Curley, Slim." "Well, you ain't tryin' very hard. I seen him goin' in your house." She was suddenly apprehensive. "Bye, boys" (pg.16). “Every city in the world always has a gang, a street gang, or the so-called outcasts.” – Jimi Hendrix. The tone, purpose, and gangs in the Outsiders and the article share some traits, and differ with others. For example, they share the theme of violence among youth. However, the view of the gangs on violence differs.…
Andy, I know I’m always reminded that whenever I go to a new branch I needed to get to know the team first, and observe everything and make a mental note of what’s working and what’s not before embarking on new challenges. I do believe in the phrase, though, ‘if it’s not broken, don’t try to fix it.’ It sounds like the new GM needed to fit in first before presenting her ‘wonderful’ plan. In addition, she lacked the important characteristics of ‘openness, candor, informality, and closure.’ It seemed as though, it was either her way or the highway.…
For as long as it has existed heavy metal has consistently been stereotyped, dismissed and condemned. Everything from the lyrics, the imagery, and the guttural vocals has been badgered by everyone who does not believe heavy metal is not a form of music. I am here to set the record straight. If people were to take the time and analyze what is in the music, heavy metal is not as demonic and malicious as it is made out to be.…
