Beginning Running
Beginning Running: Growing in an Active Lifestyle Beginning running is a sport that has great benefits. Most people start running to get their body in shape or for a specific health reason. Runners want to have more energy, protect themselves from heart disease, or they just want to feel better (Rodgers 14). Also, running is proven to be one of the most effective, cost-efficient, and accessible weight lost strategies (Allen and Bede 9). Beginning running can start at any age and continue to grow through an active lifestyle. Newton states, “no matter when, where, why, or how you’re running, it’s something you do for you.” Running can be hard especially if you are just starting a program. It takes not only physical ability and mental fortitude.

No, I’m getting tired of all the other baggage that’s come with it.…

I have been running since I started Modified Track and Field in the seventh grade. Running has been a part of my life ever since then. When I decided to join track I felt as though it was the worst mistake that I could have ever made, simply because i did not like running as a child. After trying it for the first year and not giving up I enjoyed it very much and that is when I stated that I would continue to run track till I graduated high school. Then came ninth grade and not only did I continue to do Outdoor Track but I also joined Indoor Track and it helped me improve with my running for Outdoor Track. Participating on the Sutton High School cross country team has been one of the most rewarding yet stressful experiences of my life. For the past five years the Sutton cross country team has been a second home to me and season after season I return thirsting to vanquish a competitive fire. Although I'm ecstatic about competing this year, I was not always this happy about running. Five years ago I decided to try out for a sports team that involved less hand eye coordination (seeing how I have none) and tried out for the cross country team at my school. Almost immediately did I find out that a simple task like running could become much more strenuous not only on my legs and lungs but on the mind. While my body adjusts to the challenges of dirt…

“Every day is a good day when you run.” Kevin Nelson, who wrote The Runner's Book of Daily Inspiration, could not have been envisioning the mercurial weather of Rhode Island. As a three-sport athlete in Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track, there is a certain commitment that one must have to be able to compete year-long in New England. Runners will often sugarcoat their feelings about running by saying it’s thrilling, satisfying and even fun. Although it can be personally fulfilling, it takes a lot of hard work, determination and perseverance to be an accomplished runner.…

Throughout my life, I’ve experienced both competence and incompetence. One of the times that I experienced incompetence was when I began to run in my freshmen year of High School. Having played other sports which were less tiring and fatiguing, I was met with an instant fatigue inducing and enervating sport, with no half-times or breaks. The obstacles I faced made it harder for me to be a good and capable runner, and I lagged behind the…

One of the most effective ways to improve your running technique is through form drills that emphasize specific aspects of good form and train your body to repeat those specific movements while you are running. Most drills take one or more aspects of a good form – a compacts arm swing, soft level foot strikes under your centre of mass, quick leg turn over, an upright posture with a slight forward lean at the ankles – and highlight them through repetitive motion that trains the body to be comfortable with that movement when inserted into your typical running mechanics.…
