Beethoven Symphony Analysis
Dear Mr. Arrayan Last weekend my Fine Arts class attended the Oregon Symphony’s presentation of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. The piece was monumental and included a tribute to the recently departed conductor James DePreist. The symphony played one of his favorites, “Adagietto” from Gustav Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, and Benjamin Britten’s “Ballad of Heroes”. The piece from Gustav Mahler was very dynamic and only included a timbre of string instruments that were well blended. The piece included very long drawn out notes that made it “a bittersweet song of love and longing dedicated to the composer's wife, it's emotionally affecting music in any event” according to James Mcquillen of the Oregonian. The second piece from Britten was more dissonant

In Beethoven’s Symphony no. 5 in C minor the first movement is called Allergro con brio and it is in sonata form. This movement is very intense and strong sounding and has a single rhythmic motive that is short-short-short-long. The first theme of this movement is in C minor. Throughout this theme he shifts the motive to different pitches and instruments. The second theme is in E flat major and starts with a varied basic motive of short-short-short-long-long-long. The horns starts a new melody that is calm sounding compared to the opening of this movement. In this movement you can hear horns, some woodwind instruments and some string instruments. This movement has a dramatic climax and the closing section starts in C major and moves into C minor.…

Beethoven’s 9th symphony conducted by Leonard Bernstein is a truly sophisticated piece of art that takes you through a roller coaster ride of mixed emotions. Feelings of sorrow and fear throughout the piece are coated with affirmation, that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and then Beethoven continues onto exploding your emotions using sounds that bring feelings of extreme proudness and accomplishment. This end of the journey is a magnificent chorale using a modified version of Schilling’s poem Ode to Joy.…

Ludvig van Beethoven no doubt is one of the greatest pianist and composers to date. His earlier works are usually compared to Mozart due to the similarity of the structure but one major different was Beethoven’s ability to incorporate his own imagination into each composition. Although most of his work had been recognized by the music industry, it was his first symphony of the starting point in his career. The Symphony number one, opus 21 was written in C major contain four movements, and although its structure contain some similarity to Mozart’s work, it was the one that put Beethoven onto the musical scene in Vienna.…

The greatest composer who ever lived was Ludwig van Beethoven. He knew music spoke to the heart, creating emotions, no other language could. Beethoven conveyed his feeling through the power of his music and wasn’t scared to enter unfamiliar territory when it came to his work. People weren’t used to the type of music he brilliantly composed during his time and succeeded against all odds when he lost his hearing. One of my favorite time periods was from 1803 through 1814 which was referred to as “the middle period”. This was a time period Beethoven experimented with his music leading him to change his composition style by incorporating more Romantic ideas leading him to compose songs like Symphony Number Three Eroica and One of my favorites Fifth Symphony.…

Last Monday, I got to experience a sensational performance by the University Symphony, composed by Dr. Jonathan Pasternack, that enhanced my knowledge and emotional state through the uniqueness of both the symphony and opera act. Having only experienced a symphony once during the course of my life, I was ecstatic to attend such a soothing and joyful concert. The concert was fairly short, it last two hours, and consisted of 2 symphony songs and 1 opera act. The first two were symphony, which were played in a very unpredictable manner. The melody (violins) started off very slow and quickly increased their tempo. The orchestra performed many instances of crescendo and decrescendos; this kept the audience on the edge of their seats in anticipation. The second part consisted of an opera in one act entitled “L’Enfant Ee Les Sortileges by Murice Ravel, which was sung like an act, and played by the orchestra. Both parts of the performance were very unique in there own ways, however, what intrigued me the most, was the ability of the performers to create an emotional connection with the audience.…

Friday night, Oct 3, at Lied Center, a fantastic concert featured by Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra performed here. It was the best concert I have ever listened to before because of its special performing style. I discovered that performers who played the strings, adjusted the tones of their instruments carefully before the concert began. After short opening words by the host, two speakers, and the conductor followed by the first violinist went on stage with a warm applause from the audiences. I was a little confused about the purpose of the two speakers at first, but as the concert went on, I gradually realized they explained how Tchaikovsky created his Symphony No.4. In order to correspond with the interesting speech, the Orchestra cut the whole piece of music into many small units. Each time when the speakers talked about a specific period of time Tchaikovsky had experienced, the Orchestra were playing some units that correspond to their speech.…

When the life of Ludwig van Beethoven first encroached upon my path, much the same sensation was experienced. No doubt I had heard of the composer 's name, but then so had I foreknowledge of trees, both fallen as well as standing ones. However, what of this particular composer. Had I ever entertained conversation with him? Had I known of his particular work, achievements, or failures? What difference had been made by this long extinguished life, at least where I was concerned? So here I stood. Yet another fallen giant before me in an apparently posture of complete silence leaving me to contemplate what, if any, true sound had been made as it fell.…

In the month of March, I attended the musical performance “Harp Magic” by the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra at the Michigan Theater and the performance of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra at Hill Auditorium. Though the two orchestras, repertories, and venues were all different, experiencing the two performances in the same month allowed me to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the role that symphony orchestras play in today’s society. By attending live performances of symphony orchestras in Ann Arbor, one can become engaged with musical history and the symphonic tradition, recognize the transformation of the function of symphony orchestras, and take part in enjoying and continuing the art that has also been undergoing evolution.…

The consert was my first time and delightful that I had a opportunity to listen to classical music through the first concert, two Piano Quintets performed by Karen Follingstad, Alyze Dreiling, Susan Ung, Lorie Kirkell, Bert Turetzky at the Incarnation Lutheran Church on February, 19, 2012. The performance consisted of two pieces and the first piece performed was Piano quintet, Op 87 written by J.N. Hummel in the end of classic era and the second piece was Piano Quintet, Op 114 written by F. Schubert, also as well known as “The Trout.” It was interesting that Hummel composed this quintet in 1802, almost 20 years before Schubert wrote the Trout in 1819 and their composition were widely played during their…

    Mahler Symphony 8 Analysis

Mahler places in his music his disappointments and his accomplishments, and it was felt throughout the one hour and twenty-five minutes of symphony eight. Not knowing the words that amplify Mahler’s thoughts in his creation did not deny me the privilege of sharing his sentiments because it came across forcefully in the sound effects coming from the voices, the solo selections, and the clever arrangement of the musical instruments. Mahler brought new value to the expression of music. I am convinced that Mahler’s upbringing gave him the extra zest needed to be a principal conductor and composer. According to Smith and Carson in the book, The Gift of Music: Great Composers and Their Influence, “Mahler the symphonist cannot be separated from Mahler the song composer … Mahler seeks to describe a problem fundamental to all his human being the reality of loneliness and death. In the music one hears the dualism of joy and…
