During the Classical era, two of the world’s greatest composers emerged: Ludwig van Beethoven and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Many people have heard of these men, but not many know the bumpy road they traveled to become world renowned. While both of these men are revered for their contributions to classical music, they each went about it differently. Moreover, both men had musical family backgrounds and knew music from a young age. Beethoven had many struggles, both physical and emotional, that he had to overcome during his career. On the other hand, Mozart was a child prodigy so the composition of music came very easy to him; this also made him a bit full of himself. His family was very troubled. His father was a raging alcoholic and was physically abusive towards Beethoven. Despite this, his father helped him with his music and dreamed that he would become a child prodigy, like Mozart. He supplemented his family’s income by playing the organ and the harpsichord. When he was about seventeen he got a chance to play for Wolfgang Mozart during a visit to Vienna. Mozart was impressed and warned people that they would be hearing from this young man again one day. Beethoven was influenced heavily by Mozart’s music. Beethoven spent a lot of time in Vienna, and was well-liked in this city. Beethoven made his living by preforming, composing, and giving music lessons. Just as his life seemed to be going in the right direction, Beethoven began to lose his hearing; one of the most important musical tools. Most people believe that his hearing loss attributed to his gruff attitude. He felt embarrassed, and became an introvert because he didn’t want people knowing his disability. Despite his hearing loss, he was an exquisite composer and musician. He composed nine symphonies, six concertos, thirty-two piano sonatas, and many more
