Bees: A Short Story
It disappeared in an instant. What use to be five years of best friendship, was now shattered… It all started on December 14th, which was Bethsabees sixteenth birthday. Auburn was a year younger than she was, although consistently acted as if she was 21 and living in the great: Beverly Hills. She was jealous… and decided to through Bee a birthday party, hoping that being the best friend at a birthday party means she would get tons of attention. She had planned this for years, soon realizing that the party was more hers, than it was Bees. Distinctively deciding not to do anything, she waited quietly out front of Bee’s bedroom door that morning with her present in hand. Bethsabee was quite rudimentary- she had always reminded Auburn of Sherlock Holmes, and …show more content…
“Why did you come so early?” said Bee realizing the time.
“To help you get ready! It’s not just any other day Bee, it’s your sixteenth birthday!!” Bee sat down gesturing her hands for Auburn to do the same, as Bee’s mother intruded.
Yes it is! My little baby is turning sixteen. Oh my beautiful little baby,” Bee’s mom crossed through the kitchen to get to Bee and squeeze her bony cheeks.
“Mom… I’m not your baby, you have Patricia too,” said Bee. Patricia was Bee’s younger sister that she wasn’t very close to. She had always followed after Auburn and not Bee. Anything Auburn did, Pat did. Bee sat at the table allowing her elbows to hold up her posture and waited for breakfast. Her mind wandered elsewhere as she began to think about what Auburn had said, blocking out her mother and Auburn's conversation. She had realized what Auburn said… something about having fun at HER birthday party just for Auburn. Bee had these moments- they were almost second thoughts… She sometimes regrets becoming so close to someone. There were moments in their friendship when it felt as if they didn’t know each

She reminded me that the world was really one big bee yard, and the same rules work fine in both places. Don’t be afraid, as no life-loving bee wants to sting you. Still, don’t be an idiot; wear long sleeves and pants. Don’t swat. Don’t even think about swatting. If you feel angry, whistle. Anger agitates while whistling melts a bee’s temper. Act like you know what you’re doing, even if you don’t. Above all, send the bees love, every little thing wants to be loved.” August explains to Lily that bees have a secret life, and people fail to realize how difficult their life really is. Lily realizes how a bee and her are so much alike. When bees do not have a queen they cannot function. Like Lily who greatly misses her mother, little did she know you can introduce a new queen to the hive. Lily’s new ‘queens’ were the Boatright sisters and Rosaleen. She found people who could properly love her, the bees showed Lily how adjusting to a different environment can greatly impact her life for the better.…

Bramble looked like an identical mix of her parents. Just seeing Paul sends another waterfall of tears down my face. Taking a deep breath, I get up and start walking towards the podium. After grabbing onto it for support, I take a deep breath, calm down and look at the paper in my hands. "Bramble Elliot was more than just my boss’s daughter. She was way more than that. She was like the daughter I never had, always so polite and helpful. She never wanted any of us to wait on her. Life with Bramble was always a fun, entertaining show. She made us all laugh when she would walk down the grand staircase dressed to give us a fashion show in these huge fancy dresses and shoes with her makeup and hair done, because it wasn't her. Bramble was a simple girl. If she could've, she would’ve just worn baggy sweatshirts and tights every day to school. She even told me so. Bramble thought she was unloved and that no one would care if she left; boy was she wrong. What could've made a sweet girl like her feel that way? Or more so, who? When I read the note on her door,…

The emotions are confusing some people would like to hide away then facing the facts. Kidd constructs a flexible and logical life for lily. She applies the love and the past of Lilys mother. She wants the readers to understand no matter how many people lie to you that the truth will always hurt, that the truth is the truth, and there's nothing anybody can do to change it. Kidd’s second idea is that she wants people to adapt to what is real.…

The reality of appearances can deceive people and trick them into thinking that the best people are the worst, and the worst people are the best. In mind with that; reality of people versus their appearances shows greatly throughout the story The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. When the reader deciphers the question of appearances versus realities, they can see the differences between the reality of the characters, and the way that the characters appearances are portrayed by the townspeople in Kidd's book.…

The poet Maya Aneton once said “It [is] one of the greatest gifts [a person] can give [him or herself] to forgive. Forgive everybody.” It is difficult sometimes for people to forgive themselves for past issues or transgressions. The result often becomes an inability to exculpate others as well. However, if a person can seek forgiveness, then happiness will become more apparent in his or her life. In the novel The Secret Life of Bees, Sue Monk Kidd demonstrates how contentment becomes prevalent in a person's life through the characters Lily and June once they seek forgiveness. Lily, a fourteen-year-old runaway white girl, not only struggles to forgive herself, but her father, T Ray, and her mother for their wrongdoings in her lifetime. Similarly, June, one of the Boatwright sisters that takes in Lily when she runs away, strives to pardon her ex fiance and Lily’s mother due to the undeserved way they treated June in her past.…

Before Kidd wrote this novel, she graduated from Texas Christian University with a B.S. degree in nursing, and she worked in nursing for many years. Later in life, in Kidd’s mid-twenties, she grew to love writing, and she eventually attended school for writing and obtained a degree in this profession. The novel, The Secret Life of Bees, started off as a short story that Kidd wrote, until she decided to turn the short story into an actual novel, she published in 2002. Memories are the piece of our soul who make us who we are. I have chosen to explore the theme ‘Memories and the past can affect the future’. This theme is evident in the novels The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, Before You by Amber Hart and If I Stay by Gayle Forman. It is also apparent in the film The Time Traveller’s Wife directed by Robert Schwentke.…
