The first thing in becoming an obstetrics nurse is getting into a nursing program and earning baccalaureate degree in nursing. “ Preparation for a baccalaureate nurse is 4 to 5 years in length and focuses on classes in liberal arts, humanities and sciences. The emphasis in the baccalaureate-nursing program is on developing critical decision-making skills, exercising independent nursing judgment, and acquiring research skills. The graduate of a baccalaureate program is prepared to provide health promotion and health restoration care for individuals, families and communities” (Zerwekh & Zerwekh-Garneau, 2015). Once nursing school is over, I am than eligible to take the NCLEX nursing licensure exam. After passing the NCLEX exam, you would then be a registered nurse. According to becoming an obstetric nurse, “Once you get a minimum of two years and 2,400 hours of experience in obstetrics, you can then test in the National Certification Corporation’s (NCC) Inpatient Obstetric Nursing certification exam and become a certified obstetric nurse”. I want to be the strong for new mothers whenever they are not able. I also know that being an obstetric nurse isn’t always going to be happy because newborn are very delicate and sometimes don’t survive. I feel like no one is really prepared for a death of an infant, but I would want to be able to consul those families to the best of my abilities. With that being said I will gladly except any and all of the challenges that come with being an obstetric nurse and hopefully impacting new mothers that I will eventually have the pleasure of working
