For me to get ready to be a veterinarian and to become one I would have to be taking science classes and learn about animals. Also, I would need to take english classes and practice speaking clearly and write clearly like notes so that I will be able to explain things to the animal owners about the problems, medication, and health care when I am a vet. First, a career in veterinary technologist and technician would bring me great personal satisfaction. I enjoy working, helping out, and simply being around animals. For example, Julie Legred, a veterinary technician and executive director at the National Association of veterinary technicians in America, says, “We do everything except diagnose, prescribe and do surgery. They often work in private clinics and animal hospitals, assisting veterinarians with the care of animals” ("Veterinary Technologist and Technician"). Dealing with the death of pets and distraught owners can have an effect on these professionals. Exposure to allergens like pet dander and fur, along with radiation are just some of the health issues vet technicians must deal with on a day-to-day basis. Combine all of that with playing multiple roles throughout the day - receptionist, nurse, kennel attendant, technical assistant, janitor, and counselor - and you 've got yourself one heck of a work day. Unpredictable Animals: When an animal feels threatened or alarmed, it will try to defend itself. And when in an unfamiliar area the situation could turn ugly, especially when the animal is sick or in pain. In these cases, the animals are more likely to scratch or bite. Odd Hours: Depending on the employer and his/her expectations, vet technicians may be expected to work on nights and/or weekends. Inclement weather may not be exempt either. Some of the pros of working as a veterinary technician are Pay: While a veterinary technician isn 't necessarily going to start off at $20 an hour, this figure is a possibility depending on the location of the practice and the amount of experience in the field. And with room to grow within the field, the likelihood of a raise isn 't out. Room for Advancement: Veterinary technicians have the option to develop within their field, which translates to more money and opportunities. With an extra two years of education a veterinary tech may become veterinary technologist. This position entails working in biomedical facilities, wildlife facilities, diagnostic laboratories, food safety inspection facilities, and drug and food manufacturing companies. Flexibility: Along the same lines of the point above, vet techs have flexibility to work in a diverse set of environments, not just in a local…

Through my late teen years I envisioned living in Santa Monica, California. The warm climate, pet friendly areas, and being on my own were at the top of my list. I would be attending The Academy of Art University located in San Francisco, through online courses, majoring in fashion design. My “backup” passion would be the animal health and rescue field. I had always had a passion for animals, from showing Golden Retrievers and Netherland Dwarf rabbits, to my first official job as a feline caretaker with The Second Chance Humane Society at age thirteen. Upon entering the fashion world, I quickly discovered that I would have extreme difficulty with the stress levels due to competitiveness and the overwhelming…

The education I would require in order to become a veterinary technician would be six years in total, two years to get my associate’s degree and enroll in a four-year bachelor’s degree program for animal science or pre-veterinary studies. Practical experience in a vet hospital is often part of the curriculum in a associate’s degree program. An externship can also be finished while a student is on their last semester of an associate’s degree program or during the summer. Externs assist vets by taking blood samples, weighing the patient, and sterilizing surgical tools. PIMA Community College, Mesa College, Miami Dade College, Hillsborough Community College, St. George’s University, Michigan State University, and Purdue University all offer the proper training. The skills that are required for this occupation are technical skills (x-rays, cleaning equipment and enter data into computers using spreadsheet programs), physical stamina, detail oriented, empathy and communication. You can gain experience through programs, volunteering at an animal clinic or hospital, shelter, etc. I am very creative, positive, patient, meticulous, caring, understanding, and I love all animals. In San Diego, California the annual salary for veterinary technicians is $32,000. The wage I would expect after years of experience would be $14.50, hourly pay. A veterinary technician associate’s degree costs up to $1,300 for in-state tuition, and a bachelor’s degree typically costs up to $60,000. Benefits for veterinary technicians include health and dental insurance, 2-4 weeks of paid vacation, paid sick leave, opportunities to travel (seminars, networking, etc) and most apply you with retirement. A day in the life of a veterinary technician is getting to work closely with the…
