You made a very good point with your comment about being able to understand the needs of people from other geological backgrounds. This made me think about needs from a volunteers’ prospective. How important is it to meet the needs of the volunteer? So, I began to research this and came across a guide about this very topic called, “Strategic Volunteer Engagement: A Guide for Nonprofit and Public Sector Leaders.” In it, author Rehnborg (2009) and her assistants resolved that, “no framework, regardless of how thoroughly conceptualized, is a substitute for getting to know the unique needs and concerns of each volunteer” (Concluding Thoughts section, para. 5).…

I have quite a few reasons for wanting to serve in the Peace Corps. The largest of which would be linked to my educational background in political science and international relations. Needless to say, to further both of these areas for the benefit of the nations of the world requires an understanding and knowledge of different types of peoples, places, and situations. Essentially, they can only be aided and reinforced by understanding people of all walks of life. When foreigners are not seen as such and rather seen as friends and allies, or rather no difference at all, relationships with them function smoothly and all involved parties are able to get more accomplished. I think the best, if not only, way to achieve this is by gaining firsthand…

The topic of my paper will be focusing in on how patients are treated in their non-native countries, the primary focus being on undocumented in the country. The two nations that will be looked at are the United States and Mexico. The reason I have chosen this topic was that I have some experience in this field and if I continue on the path I’d like to, there will be many more experiences surround this topic in my future. My personal experience which I feel that I can bring to the paper is the volunteering I have done at a free clinic. Many of the people who would come to us did not have US papers, and all of the patients we saw did not have medical insurance. In fact, there was a process to become a patient including a forty-five-minute visit.…

Hunger has always been a serious issue and still is today. Many people experience food insecurity and feel shameful when going to food pantries or seeking assistance. We can reduce the negative stigma associated with food pantries in numerous ways. First spreading awareness of the need for food pantries will help change the stigma as people realize that the need is real. Then educating the public on the number of people in need of the food pantries because of their struggle with food insecurity will show how prevalent the need has become. Most of all volunteering in food pantries is a firsthand way to get involved and reduce the negative feeling associated with the need for assistance. These few things will be a great start in reducing the…

My first and highest interest is homelessness and housing. I find myself passionate about wanting to give homeless or underprivileged individuals and/or families a fresh start. Nothing beats connecting individuals to the right resources, watching them take control back over their lives, and striving to reach their fullest potential. A newer area of interest I have is international social work. I keep finding myself drawn to global poverty and the affects poverty has on the individuals and/or families such as little to no schooling, poor health, high disease rates, starvation, and war. Ultimately, I am interested in helping restore dignity within these individuals and communities by advocacy and through breaking down development barriers.…

There are two options as to what can be contributed to aid in humanitarian efforts: time or money. However, at this age, being financially limited, donating time is the most liable option. Habitat for Humanity, created in 1976, is a great non-profit organization that I would love to get involved with because of its humble objective that has helped and inspired many. I would also enjoy working with this organization because aside from their main objective, they encourage women to volunteer and learn how to build and construct homes. Habitat for Humanity works tirelessly to provide families who have limited resources with affordable housing. This organization is a Christian group that helps regardless of race or religion and encourages everyone…
