Becoming A Learner Analysis
I found many of the topics discussed in Becoming a Learner useful, but the things I found most useful were how most college students go into college and how it is wrong. Sanders describes how many students go into college with the assumption that college will give them a good life. Talking about this he says, “The problem with this conversation is that it can turn education into an obligation instead of an opportunity” (Sanders 26). I can relate to this because many times I have thought that college would be the reason I can have a good life. Thinking this way makes college seem like an obstacle to overcome, instead of an opportunity to learn new skills and to experience life. Sanders explained how easy it is to get caught up in grades and not really learn. He said, “I quickly learned that it was possible to get an A on an assignment or in a class and yet learn very little. I also realized that I could get a B or C and learn a lot” (Sanders 33). I have had many experiences that relate to this. I took Biology my Sophomore year of high school and coasted through the assignments and didn’t study for any of the tests. Another theme I found evident throughout the book was to learn as much as you possibly can. In How We Got to Now this was also one of the main themes. Johnson talked about how many of the great innovators have had to learn something new or be exposed to a new environment in order to get the idea to invent something.
