Becoming an Effective Leader

My own experience in leadership has been achieved during the last three and a half years working at Lufthansa technic Malta. The company has been operating in Malta for the last 12 years in which there has been a rapid growth in the company operations creating opportunities and developments. For the last two years I’ve had the opportunity to start working as a shop leader, developing my skills and gaining experience through qualified and experienced role models in aviation. For the past three years, Lufthansa technic Malta shop departments have developed rapidly, where positions as shop leaders and shop in charges helped to develop a more effective leadership structure. Safety awareness increased as well, in which the company invested a lot in the people’s safety equipment and personal tooling. As a result, the improved structure and development helped me a lot as a leader to implement different types of leadership styles in variety of situations with different people to achieve our goals.

Understand own ability to fulfil key responsibilities of the leadership role

There are a variety of leadership styles, in which each leader implement his or her own style. Good leaders will vary in leadership styles according to the situation and people involved. As a leader the ability to lead others and to be able to make people follow and understand your vision and goals is one of the utmost importance in leadership (Kippenberger, n.d.). “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way” -John Maxwell

To be an effective leader to others first you need to be a leader yourself. As a leader, self- awareness and self-regulation are two important aspects. I need to realize and understand my moods, emotions and drives and be able to control them and address them, not to affect others negatively and their performance. “Think twice before you speak, because your words and influence will plant the seed of either success or failure in the mind of another” -Napoleon Hill

Moreover, as a leader I am required to possess a variety of skills such as responsibilities to my actions, communication, drive and passion towards work. A leader has to make decisions and have the vision to set realistic and achievable goals. Giving Feedback to your team on their performance and behavior is of the utmost importance, so that if negative feedback is communicated to an individual or the team in general, each individual can improve his behavior or performance. Likewise, positive feedback will enhance motivation and drive to move forward. As a leader accepting feedback is important because you can evaluate and determine if you are leading well and effectively or whether there are certain aspects that need to improve. The way you communicate and the tone of voice you use with your followers can affect their motivation and performance on their everyday job. A leader needs to be excited every day and be able to place all his effort in his work (Dubrin, 2009).

There are a lot of more skills that I as a leader must possess and use, such as integrity, ambition, confidence and dedication. Being honest in your decisions and having a strong moral principal by being able to distinguish right from wrong determines a leader’s integrity. An effective leadership role involves a huge quantity of success but even failures, however as a leader I use failures to learn and to be able to improve my leadership skills and all the team members.
