Become A Pediatric Surgeon
“Ayudar a los demás va a cambiar a todos, incluido usted,” was a phrase my grandmother had drilled in my head. My grandmother was the traditional Mexican grandmother, except for the fact that she believed in a woman’s power more than anything. And my grandmother believed in me more than anything and anyone. She instilled the idea that helping people, in anyway possible, was the best way to live, that I could make the world a better place by doing my part. This lesson has led me to become extremely involved in different charities and organizations to aid people, and my want to become a pediatric surgeon. My volunteer work was a direct impact of my need to make my grandmother proud of me, but it surprised me when I realized how great volunteering

At this church, there was an organization called Milal that helps take care of people with disabilities. It was in that place that I was able to learn the true meaning of helping others.…

In high school, I joined Zonta Club to be involved with school and community. Zonta Club gave me an opportunity to reach out to people that had helped others and inspired other students to do the same. One of the unforgettable moments was when I volunteered in a fundraiser to help Alzheimer's disease. It was an event, called Rock-a-Thon, where kids and adults were together to raise awareness those who had the disease. Everyone was participating in the activities that were available in the event. There were games that both kids and elders could play with. They showed stories about the importance of being aware and helping those with Alzheimer’s disease. The event had shaped my views on giving back to the community. Service was not only about giving back, but it is also about learning from others. The joy that the people had even when there was a sickness in their life was incredible. It made me realize how I was fortunate to be living a life without the disease. The fundraiser had made me learn about the people in my town and the obstacles that had to endure and were still enduring. The event had impact the involvement and the appreciation I have over the…

Here are some examples of my service to my community. During my 8th grade year in Elena Christian Jr. High School, both my classmates and I, we decided to do a beach cleanup. In my Senior Year of being in the National Honor Society, I was excited to volunteer and to help those in need. I helped out with a soup kitchen in Brainerd through another organization that I am in, the Student Council. As I scooped soup into bowls and placed them onto people’s trays, I could see a look of appreciation and gratitude on their faces. This was the first time in my National Honor Society career where I understood just how much my time and effort meant to these individuals. This volunteer opportunity made me realize that a simple meal, smile, and effort to do something helpful and nice can really make someone’s day brighter or easier.…

Foremost, I grew up with parents who moved from the Dominican Republic and never had a college education. The time and dedication they take to do their jobs is incredible. There are times where I don’t get to see my father for weeks being he’s too focused on his job. On one occasion my father had to work for almost 48 hours straight due to a broken machine in his workplace. When I did see him, he was completely exhausted he looked as if he were a walking corpse. Dark shade of purple under his eyes, dragging his feet across the floor. I never want to see my father as rough as he was again. I don’t think that’s the life anyone wants. It makes me want to go further than they have gone. Not only seeing, but actually experiencing what they go through opened my eyes on how far you can go…

Ever since I was a child I was always inspired to help others. Whether it was volunteering or donating or even taking a survey to give my perspective, as long as it was helping someone and making a difference- I always enjoyed it. So going into high school year, I took the initiative of volunteering. Volunteering at the Yale Hospital since high school for four years truly changed me as a person by helping me grow as a better leader. I came out of my comfort zone and the program gave me an opportunity to experiment and try new things. It taught me responsibility, working skills, how to interact with patients, staff, and visitors of the hospital. I was lucky enough to work at different sectors of the hospitals and familiarize myself with the hospital setting. In this process, I learned…

Whether it was holding the door open for the person behind me or simply telling them to have a nice day, my favorite thing to do has always been to make people smile. In elementary school, more often than not, I assumed the role of class helper. This entailed staying after class parties to help clean up messes or spending extra time at recess to make sure all of the kickballs were in their specific spots. As I've grown up, it only makes sense that my love for helping people in any shape or form has translated into a love for volunteering. Whether it is tutoring elementary school children or helping run a clothing drive, the numerous altruistic tendencies that have been instilled in me through volunteer work will forever shape who I am as a…

My grandmother has been through so much in her life, and I felt all I have done was go to school. Where is the heroism in that? I started to wonder what my grandmother would think of me if she was still around today. What would she even be proud of?On that very same day, I promised myself that I would ask myself one question before I make a big decision: “Would my grandmother be proud of me if she saw me today?” It’s been strangely effective: Since then, I have realized what I want to do after high school. I want to be able to help affect the world just like my grandmother did. And, since science is my strong suit, I decided to honor her in that way. I want to figure out a way to prevent cancer. It’s difficult to argue that my grandmother wouldn’t be proud of…

Since I was 8 in Brazil, my family has been a great influence on volunteer activities. They have helped me since I was younger to understand that the world is full of people living in different realities, and if i can, I should help their realities be a little brighter. I will never forget the little girl I was in charge for 2 years, Hillary, cried whenever we had to be a part. I was not allowed to see or ask much of her private life, but I knew that those 4 hours we spend together every Sunday made it better. However, what I could do for her was nothing compare of what she did for me, during the 2 years I volunteer at the NGO, Sonhar Acordado. After spending my childhood helping my mom on Institutions and Public Schools and Brazil, I never…
