According to Beck depression cannot be defined only by reference to mood, instead he believes that; alteration in mood, a negative self-image, desire for self-punishment, physical changes in the body, and changes in level of activity are the key characteristics by which depression can be defined. According to the NIMH, it’s likely that depression is caused by a mix of psychological, environmental, biological, and genetic factors. In this essay the notion that depression is caused by neurochemical imbalances will be discussed, key ideas will be presented and research evidence to support this notion will also be provided and briefly

    To track and measure the effectiveness of Peter’s intervention, I would use the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). BDI-II is a self-report survey with 21 multiple-choice items used to measure the severity of depression symptoms. I chose this specific measure for several reasons: 1) It takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes to complete. 2) The scale demonstrates good internal consistency. 3) The scale was updated to align for the criteria for depression in the DSM. 4) The scale highly correlates with clinician assessments of depression severity (Zimmerman, 2011). The social worker, myself, would be responsible for overseeing the administration of the BDI-II. It will be my responsibility to collect and document the results.
