A Little Piece of a Big, Big Universe
This is a story of life most of us are not accustomed to. This movie takes the viewers to a community with different values and standards for living. Instead of a focus on education, nutrition, and proper behavior, the characters here are centered on survival. These seem like wild animals to us. The Bathtub of Louisiana is not a place most of us envision raising a child. The movie centers around one 6 year old little girl, Hushpuppy who lives in the Bathtub with her Daddy. With no previous acting experience, she won the hearts of many with her performance.
There is a lot that Hushpuppy has to figure out along the way. Her father, Wink, is the only family she has since her mother is not in the picture. He has a fatal illness that is slowly killing him. The place she lives is on the verge of being swallowed by the ocean. The people who live all around her are all uneducated alcoholics willing to die in order to stay loyal to their impoverished community. The people of The Bathtub are taught to take care of themselves. They are raised to be tough as nails. The children are taught about a fierce animal from the days of cave people, the Auroch. It was the ruler of the earth before the Ice age. It is through images of this animal that Hushpuppy comes to terms with the huge changes her life is about to go through.
This little girl has to deal with some major issues that no one has explained to her in a way that she could possibly understand. She has to somehow find a way to process things like her father’s illness and being left alone in the world after he dies. She believes “the whole universe depends on everything fitting together just right. If one piece busts, even a tiny piece, the entire universe will get busted.” When she and her father get into a fight and she wishes him dead, he falls down and has a heart attack. At that moment, she thinks she started the end of the world as she knows it. This is when the Ice caps...
