Bear Creek Lab Report
Tables 1 and 3 shows the measurements of the 10-meter stretch of Bear Creek that includes a pool and a riffle. The first table also shows the recorded time and weather in which our class collected the data during that particular day. The upper, middle, and lower transects are measured using meters. Each of the transects are first measured by width and then by depth on the: Left edge, mid-stream, and right edge. Then there is description on the substate and the site on both the upper and middle transect. In the lower transect there is a description of substrate and bank. There are many similarities in the type of substrate found in both Cherry Creek and Bear Creek such as moss, mud, rocks, grass, and sand but when it comes to pollutants contaminating …show more content…
Our results found that in Bear Creek there was far less pollution due to the fact that it isn't running parallel to a major city like Cherry Creek is. In the case of Bear Creek the organism found, like caddisflies, have to have high oxygen content which means less pollutants. When looking at Cherry Creek there was an abundance of beetles which live in fast moving clean bodies of water. There were far more bloodworms found in Bear Creek compared to Cherry Creek which could be due to the fact that Bear Creeks soils are healthier. Bear Creek had far less pollution than Cherry Creek which led to more variety of species found living in Bear Creek. The results were no different from what I had expected because Cherry Creek is man made that runs parallel to Denver with sewage running off into the creek. Some human errors in this experiment could have been the fact that we did not perform this experiment. Also the people that did the experiment could have miscounted organisms. Pollutions relates to the amount of organisms living in the ecosystem due to the fact that pollutants effect the physical, chemical, and biological conditions of an ecosystem. This has a trickling affect on the whole food web, killing off some of the inhabitants. The more pollutants in a river denies the ecosystem homeostasis therefore harming the macro-invertebrates. If Cherry Creek were not next to a major city like Denver, with sewage running off into it, then it would probably have a healthier aquatic ecosystem. When we compared Bear Creek and Cherry Creek, Bear Creek had the healthier aquatic

The objective of this lab was to consult for the FDA regarding a recently surfaced scandal involving false reporting of iron content in cereal as well as iron tablets. The makers of the cereal and the iron tablets, respectively, were allegedly reporting higher amounts of iron in their products than actually existed, as a way to save money but continue to provide products with “adequate” amounts of iron. The FDA needed consulting in order to analyze the products and use the data to determine the true amount of iron in each product, as well as confirm that the iron was usable by the human body. The methods used to analyze the products, data, and results will be provided in the sections below.…

Then after completing this test, I would check to see if there is” of course “an increase in the fish present in the water. This observation would help keep track of the fish present in different areas of the water and furthermore, I would be able to compare results.…

We went to the Conodoguinet Creek to test the pollution levels of the creek. My hypothesis was If we check the pollution levels in the water, then we will find out that the water isn’t very polluted. You may be wondering, what are some of the causes of pollution? Well, the velocity of the water has a lot to do with the health. When the velocity of the water is faster, everything will be moving around more and there will more more dissolved oxygens. the mud and sediments won’t just stay there and it will just keep on moving so . Well, there are two main causes of pollution in the Conodoguinet creek, acidic rain and eutrophication. Eutrophication is the amount of nutrients in the water and it can be caused by runoff from land, sewage plants,…

Based on the evidence from our lab data we found mostly tolerant organisms such as we found a lot of Hydropsychidae (163) and they were tolerant (tolerance 5). Another example we found is the Chirionomidae (50) and they were tolerant (tolerance 6). One example that we didn’t find much of/a lot of were the Caddisflies we found 6 and the pollution tolerance was 2.8 which indicates to us that it is pollution sensitive. Lastly we didn’t encounter Stoneflies/Plecoptera we found 0 (none of them were found!) and they were pollution sensitive value of 1.…

INTRODUCTION There are many reasons for knowing the identity of microorganisms. The reasons range from the knowing the causative agent of a disease to knowing the correct microorganism in order to make antibiotics. This study was done by applying the following methods; OF Glucose, Indole Production, and Malonate Utilization test for the identification of an unknown bacterium. The methods will assist in determining the unknown bacterium found in a 55 year old male that was passing blood and mucous in his stool. The patient had no pain but mild discomfort during bowel movements. The doctor noted inflammation of the lining of the rectum. The doctor removed a tissue sample for examination and referred the patient to a gastroenterologist for a barium xray and colonoscopy. While utilizing the methods stated above, the bacterium found was a facultative anaerobe due to the Gram Negative Rods, fermentation, and the production of indole. The specific Gram Negative Enteric Bacilli was Shigella dysenteriae. There are many reasons for knowing how to control bacterial growth as well as such as antimicrobial drugs, which assist the body’s defenses against pathogens. Microorganisms are capable of causing infection or spoilage. Controlling bacterial growth is important in poultry farm businesses that use equipment to decontaminate processing plant fluids before disposal. During quality control and safety evaluations, bacteria growth that needs to be controlled can be found. While controlling bacterial growth, clusters of Gram Positive Cocci were found. It was found some ways to control bacterial growth were disinfection, sterilization, antisepsis, sanitization, moist and dry heat, filtration, and radiation; just to name a few. The specific method used for control depends on various circumstances.…

“In the United States, a concerted effort is underway to reduce water pollution and thereby improve water quality.” (Keller) A case history of river pollution is the Cuyahoga River located in Northeastern Ohio. The river is 100 miles long flowing south to Cuyahoga Falls where it then turns north until it empties into Lake Erie. Cleveland and Akron are two major cities located along the river. The Cuyahoga is known as an infant glacial river, this is because it is one of the youngest river created from the melting of the glaciers. It is estimated that the river is about 13,000 year old. The story of the Cuyahoga is one with many lows and highs. The fires being the lows; new legislation and organizations formed to clean up and then prevent this from happening to other rivers being the highs.…
