Data communications (Datacom) is the engineering Datacom) discipline concerned with the communication between devices. A network is a set of devices (often referred to as nodes) nodes) connected by communication links. links. A computer network is any set of computers or devices connected to each other via some form of transmission medium with the ability to exchange data. Here information is presented in a form which is agreed upon by the parties creating and using the data. A computer network must be able to meet a certain number of criteria. The most important of these are criteria. Performance : measured in “throughput” & “delay” Reliability : measured by the frequency of failure or time taken by the link to recover from failure. failure. Security : protecting from unauthorized access or damage

A star topology connecting four stations

Dedicated connection between a pair of computers guarantees the congestion free data transfer Failure of one link does not affect the data transfer Each message travels through dedicated path.

Some of the devices and nodes are connected through single hops and some are connected with more than one hop. In a true mesh topology, every node is connected to every other node in the network. When data is traveling in a mesh network, the network is automatically configured to take the shortest route to reach the destination. In other words, the data is transferred through least number of hops.…

Communication is a term for passing information from one to another; this can be done physically, verbally, visually and also technologically for example email. Physical communication requires one to physically send a message for example a hand shake to say thanks, this message can also be passed on verbally and technologically. Visual communication requires usually involves demonstration sometimes mixed with verbal communication to help learners understand or stay more focused.…

The first four topologies that will be discussed are the point to point, the star, the bus, and the mesh. A point to point topology is known as the simplest topology because of its permanent link between two end points. Star topology each network host is connected to a central hub with a point-to-point connection to a central node which is called a hub or switch. Bus topology each computer is connected to a single Bus cable, which then sends a signal which travels in both directions from the source to all machines connected on the Bus cable, until it finds the intended recipient. If the machine address for some reason does not match the intended address for the data, then the machine ignores that machine address. However, if the data matches it is accepted. The bad part of this topology is that it has a single point of failure which is the cable and if this happens the whole network can shut down. Mesh-is a fully connected network in which each node is connected to each other. A fully connected network does not need to use switching or broadcasting. However its major disadvantage is that the…

The Data Link Layer offers the function to move data between networks and make corrections to errors that could possibly occur during the Physical Layer. This layer was meant for point-to-point and point-to-multipoint media characteristics of a wide area media in the telephone system. On the third layer which is the Network Layer, the addressing and routing is executed. One of the best known examples of the Network Layer is the IP (Internet Protocol). On the Transport Layer of the OSI model is where the flow control and the error handling is achieved. An example is the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). On the Session Layer, the assemblies, and synchronizations are complete.…
