Baseline Self-Assessment Memo
Talking about my communication skills, I don’t find it easy to express my weaknesses and strengths, but even dough I think I’m not that bad communicating myself I think that I have a lot more to learn to apply it in my daily and professional life.
I would say that my writing skills are good, even better when I use a writing computer program such as Word, but in general I think I have a richer vocabulary when I’m writing than when I’m speaking, and my grammar and spelling are not that bad. The difficulties that I have when I’m writing are related to give a concise and clear idea of what I’m trying to say, because sometimes I have been misunderstood with written information. Using written communication I feel more comfortable because most of the times you have time to think what you want to say and arrange your ideas, and even when you think you are wrong you can just press backspace and write again, something you can’t do when you are speaking. Some of my goals for this class are to improve my written communication specially my spelling and my speed to express what I want to say concisely, don’t think too much what I’m writing.
About my weaknesses and strengths as a speaker I would say that I really need to trust the people to be able to communicate well, sometimes it’s difficult for me to try to speak to a big crowd probably because I’m worrying about how would they react or if I’m not interesting enough for the all the persons which I’m talking with. Except for that, I think I’m not that bad as a speaker, especially in small groups or one on one conversation. I think I can be a good speaker but I really need to know a little the people who I’m talking with.
As a member of a group I find it easy to express myself but as I told before I prefer smalls group, so everybody can hear and be heard, I also think this is a great way to get to know people because most of the times its easier for me to be part of a group conversation than a two person conversation. I find really easy to work as a team, i consider myself a flexible and adaptable person that can play any role in a group.
My main goals for the Business Communication class is to improve my communication skills, specially the conciseness and clearness of my ideas when I write and when I speak, I would also like to improve my grammar because I think this could be another weakness, but I specially want to learn to speak and write more naturally, I mean, without thinking twice what I want to say, just express myself and become more confident of my communication skills. I intend to reach these goals whit hard and continuous work during the semester, trying to get involved as much as I can in class activities and participating actively during classes.

I believe that when someone is up front making a presentation, it is very important that people are able to hear you talk. I know I have a loud voice, and when I do public speaking, I have no problem with people being able to hear me. Another strength that I have is being animated. Reading a paper aloud makes errors a lot more noticeable rather than reading silently. A professor once to told me this is very effective and to date I must say that it works.
