Baseball/Softball

Baseball is a very commonly played sport. There was once a story that Abner Doubleday invented baseball in 1839 but that story was never really proved. The first published rules were written in 1845 for a New York baseball club by Alexander Cartwright. He is known as a commonly “father of baseball”. On June 3, 1953 congress officially gave Alexander Cartwright credit for inventing the current game of baseball. Alexander is a member of the baseball hall of fame.

Baseball is a game played by two teams. The teams are either offense or defense. Each alternation is called an inning which is a length fixed segment of a game and there are usually nine innings per game. There are four main tools for baseball which are a bat, ball, mitt, and off course the field!

The goal of the game is to score more points or runs than the opposite team. To score you have to complete a tour of bases which form a square shaped figure that’s called a diamond. First you start at home plate and go counter-clockwise. Every field has a diamond with bases at its corners. The part of the field closest to the bases is called the infield. The furthest part is the outfield. A play begins with an offensive player called a batter standing at home plate. The batter waits for the pitcher to throw the ball toward home plate and tries to hit the ball. If the batter hits the ball into play the batter must drop the bat and start running toward first base. The catcher’s job is to catch the pitches that the batter doesn’t hit and return them to the pitcher.

If the batter fails to hit a well pitched ball or if he hits it so that it goes outside the field is called a strike. When the batter starts running he is now referred to as the “runner”. The runner’s goal is to reach a base where they could be safe. The defensive players try to stop the runners from reaching base by putting him out using the ball. Runners that get put out leave the field and go to the bench or dugout that’s the place where other inactive players watch the game.

Right now my favorite baseball team is the Yankees. The Yankees are a professional baseball team from the Bronx, New York. The Yankees are members of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball. From 1923 to the present the Yankees home has been the Yankee Stadium. The Yankees have been Major League Baseball’s most successful franchise with 26 World Series and 39 American League Pennants. They have also won the most titles of a North American franchise in professional sport history. My favorite player from the Yankees is #2. That is Derek Sanderson Jeter. Derek Jeter was born on June 26, 1914 in New Jersey. He is currently 33 years old. Derek has spent his entire career with the Yankees. Starting in 1995 when he was 20 years old. He has won awards such as Rookie of the Year, Silver Slugger, and three Golden Glove awards. He became the only player that won the All-Star Game MVP and World Series MVP Award in the same year. Derek’s batting average ranks him with the fifth highest lifetime batting average of active baseball players. He has been in the top seven in the American League in both hits and runs scored for nine out of the past ten years. Derek Jeter is also the current captain for the Yankees. Baseball is a very commonly played sport and also very fun. You just to make sure you follow all the rules. And if you are really good at baseball you might become as good as Derek Jeter and end up playing for the Yankees!
