I'm about to cry, Lydia is riding shyann so i'm next to her. She said, “ Lorissa you did good.”
The judges come up to me and tell me I can go again so lydia took shyann away. Barrel racing hasn’t changed must since 1948. But it takes a lot of skill to make the turns around the barrels. The rider has to rate their horses speed at the right moment to make it into the turn in a fluid motion that will save them time. The rider has to make either one right turn and two left turns or one left turn and two right turns. Normally the rider goes into the first barrel from an angle to the left and makes a right turn. Then they go to the barrel that is directly across from the first barrel, making a horizontal line with the starting line. At this barrel they would make a left turn when they came in from the right side. After that they head towards the last barrel that would be at the top of the triangle from the starting line. They will come in from the right again and make a left turn. After this, they let their reins loose and they let the horse go back over that line as fast as it can.…

An Autobiography by Kinsey DeVine “If the dust ain’t flying, you ain’t trying”, author unknown for sure, but I associate it with nine year old, barrel racing phenomenon, Chayni Chamberlin. If my mom would have heard that saying eleven years ago, she probably would have said that saying could apply to every aspect of my life. Whether it’s on horses or not, it captures the essence of giving my all in everything I do, including trying to come into this world. Eleven years ago on February 7, 2006 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, a baby girl was born. After twenty-four hours of labor with no luck, I had to be taken via cesarean section.…

The judge called the people one by one until the 3rd person went. Scores were gave. It was then my turn. I went to the middle ring. I tripped on my uniform, got up and did my form wrong. I completely flipped out and melted. I was sobbing on the red and blue mat. Then the master judge came over to me and asked “Would you like to try again? We can only give you 3 points but you can go again.”…

Kayleigh had a thing with gloves, she always wanted them put on a finger at a time, tedious—but a must. She had been running late and as soon as she arrived she was swept onto her horse, Sugar, and another volunteer swiftly put her gloves on for her to save her from the nipping chill. A few laps around the barn and Kayleigh was absolutely unappeasable. Despite our desperate pleas, she had completely given up on riding Sugar a single lap more, and her crying only worsened with the incessant jabbering directed at her. She refused to hold the reins, holding her hands above her head as if her life depended on it. Though the other volunteers were adamant that she continue riding, I finally spoke up. After vocalizing my concern that we try a new approach, they permitted my request that we stop the horse so that I could talk to Kayleigh, and once we did, I immediately knew the culprit— her gloves. I took them off and put them back on just as she liked, and we talked until she was calmed. By the time she got back on Sugar she was practically bouncing with joy again, seemingly oblivious to her tantrum not five minutes…

I lay here in this Inn recovering from the biggest beating I have ever had. Being the youngest out of the five brothers, I thought I knew what it meant to be beat up. I always thought I could handle myself in a fight: even, I mean, I was able to give my brothers a good run for their money. But apparently I was more wrong than you could ever imagine. I guess I should actually tell you what happened and why I am laying here in the first place. I’m going to warn you though it’s a long story and if you don’t care for violence then I wouldn’t stick around to listen to it.…
