When hooks writes “we know Barbie was born to be alone" she means that Barbie was made to be by herself. Unlike Baby, Hook’s black baby doll, Barbie was manufactured as an adult. Barbie was made to be all by alone, no family, no kids, and no friends except the imaginary ones that people create for her. Baby also comes with no family, kids, or friends but she was made to be cared for. Hooks mentions "she [Barbie] never does housework, washes dishes, or has children to care for", Hooks speaks about Barbie and the careless attitude that she was given. Barbie is a tall, thin, white, blonde hair and blue eyed doll. Barbie dolls are made to look a certain way and be portrayed in a certain way. People influence what makes you who you are they influence your identity. Without others around and someone that cares for you, you do not have a successful identity. Without your identity you are alone. Without Hooks, Baby would have nothing, no doll houses or clothing, but Barbie without hooks, would still have her clothing and accessories. Barbie is still holding the same image. Barbie’s image gives girls bad self-esteem and unreal expectations of themselves. This image portrays Barbie’s identity, her identity that makes her born to be alone.
