Banned Books: Looking For Alaska Why do you think books are banned and challenged? Well, books are banned and challenged for many reasons. Reasons like they may contain sexual content, explicit language, racism, and a wide variety of other reasons. Did you know that parents initiate 9 out of 10 challenges on books? Books usually are challenged with the best intentions—to protect others, frequently children, from difficult ideas and information ("About Banned & Challenged"). Once the book is banned, readers have either limited or no access to it. Smoking cigarettes. Swearing. Drinking - lots of drinking (Browning). The teenagers at Culver Creek drink. A lot. But the drinking doesn't just happen for fun, and in its most innocent use, alcohol in Looking For Alaska is tied to breaking the rules and getting away with it ("Looking For Alaska Theme"). Yes indeed Looking For Alaska does have many scenes and parts that deal with alcohol and parents around the country do not like that. There is a lot of controversy about this book and to why it is banned. It does indeed contain sexual references, explicit and inappropriate language, and the frequent consumption of alcohol. Those are the main reasons to why it is banned. If anyone has an opinion on this book and to whether it should be banned or not, they can report to ala.org and search "Reporting a Challenge." From there it'll direct that person on how to report and share their opinion on this banned book, or possibly another banned or challenged book. Looking For Alaska is definitely a vulgar book nonetheless. It contains some mature content that particular people may not be able to handle. Personally, I thought the book was well written and had a good story line. It pulled you into the deep world of Alaska Young's mind and explored all the things it had to offer along with Miles Halter by her side. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a sad yet hilarious story about teenagers. That is why books are banned and challenged, and why the particular book Looking For Alaska is a banned
