Ballistic Body Armor
Journal Article 6: Coppola, M. (February, 2013). Ballistic Body Armor: A Closer Look at the Follow-Up Inspection and Testing Program. NIJ Journal/Issue No. 271
Summary
The NIJ has been developing standards for body armor for over 40 years. Although it is not a requirement for manufacturers worldwide to conform to these NIJ standards, it is highly recommended to ensure sales and marketability to law enforcement agents who wear these items on a day to day basis. These manufacturers submit armor samples to be tested, so they can be approved to be placed on the Compliant Products List so they may be more readily purchased. When these manufactured body armor samples failed testing, the manufacturers were able to recall these items and repair any defects that were found. The NIJ periodically updates these standards to ensure the safety of the agents who depend on body armor for the safety of their lives.

Opinions
NIJ compliance testing of body armor is a great idea to help assure law enforcement agents are given as much protection as possible. It is also a good idea that these inspectors conduct random

inspections at these manufacturing facilities to make sure the everyday manufactured products are meeting the same standards as the samples that were submitted for approval. It is an interesting topic regarding body armor purchased by civilians. Currently in Maryland, it is legal for civilians to purchase body armor unless they are convicted felons or convicted of drug trafficking. Gang members and terrorists such as James Holmes, the movie theater shooter in Aurora Colorado, wore body armor in the commission of crimes. This makes the jobs of police officers that much more difficult, and reduces their job safety. This is becoming such an extreme problem, some police departments are purposely burning and destroying their old vests to keep them out of the hands of criminals.

The CBRN (chemical, bacteriological, radiological and nuclear) inherent to the military profession is covered by specific training and is not a part of the program. Specific means of protection, sampling and decontamination for these hazards are part of the mandatory annual training of military personnel. The RPP is complete and also take into account specific responsibilities of various entities within the forces (fire marshall, Preventive medicine tech, Chief medical officer, direct supervisors, etc.). One drawback of this program is that no data is kept in the centralized medical file for fit testing of mask or apparatus. The assessment of the individual for its ability to wear is the responsibility of a department which does have limited access to the medical information of the worker. In addition, civilian employee’s medical file is not included in the centralized database. Supervisor’s notes or comments about the workers respect for protection usage are not accessible to medical personnel. This limits the ability of the preventive technician to assess properly the situation and possibly make a correlation between exposure and protection measure, individual or administrative. I have included the program in my assignment…

Protective clothing Clothing can offer protection from biting insects when it is of a thickness and texture through which insects cannot easily bite. Lighter colours generally attract fewer insects than darker colours. Boots can protect the ankles from biting insects. Thick socks in combination with long trousers offer protection when the bottoms of the trousers are tucked into the socks. Some protection is also offered by longsleeved shirts, headnets, collars and hats. However, some insects can bite through socks or other clothes; the treatment of clothing with an insecticide or repellent can deter this. The small biting midges, sandflies and blackflies are unable to bite through clothes, even if these are made of thin material (40). People active during daytime can best protect themselves by wearing thin clothing over as much of the body as possible and applying repellents to the parts of the body left exposed (26, 41). Repellents are only partially effective against swarms of biting midges. Headnets or hooded wide-mesh jackets impregnated with a repellent offer good protection (22, 42–44).…
