Ethan only wanted someone for the winter to keep him from isolation. Ethan never loved Zeena, he made her stay in Starkfield for his own problems and needs. From this evidence, we can agree that Ethan should have left Starkfield so he would not have to worry about being alone.
Lastly, in the book Ethan Frome, he made the choice of getting in a sledding accident with Mattie and she explains this by stating,“Right into the big elm. You said you could. So’t we’d never have to leave each other any more.” (Wharton 179). Mattie suggests that they should get in a sled accident so they can stay together. Ethan could have left Starkfield when he had the chance, but he makes the choice of going back to Starkfield by agreeing to get in a sledding accident.
In conclusion, Ethan makes the choice of staying in Starkfield from his own personal choices by asking Zeena to stay with him, getting in a sledding accident with Mattie. Ethan is a victim of his choices because of his own actions and attitude. The decision of Ethan staying in Starkfield has resulted in all three of them having to continue to stay in Starkfield, which will be unhealthy and a burden for all of

Edith Wharton’s Ethan Frome is set in a rural New England winter. The town of Starkfield is a cold and lifeless place where life is dull and somber. Wharton labels Starkfield as a small farming community and it certainly lives up to its name. A desolate and poor place, this God-forsaken town has the power to shape the lives of its people. Having winters that last for six months, people succumb to stay indoors and keep to themselves. Weeks go by and there is little or no social interaction between friends and neighbors. Like the town, people are dreary and cheerless. The setting of the novel plays an important role in the development of the main characters as it shapes and eventually determines both the personalities and destinies of Ethan,…

Ethan Frome, the title character of the novel by Edith Warton, lives in a world that constrains him; one that he is unable to escape from. The prominent use of winter imagery throughout this novel conveys this ideas of detachment and isolation. Winters in Starkfield, the setting for this story, are ones of unimaginable length and vigor. In the prologue, the narrator notices, "(…) when the storms of February had pitched their white tents about the devoted village and the wild cavalry of March winds had charged down to their support; I began to understand why Starkfield emerged from its six months' siege like a starved garrison capitulating without quarter." This demonstrates very clearly the effects of winter on Starkfield, likening it to a…

In Ethan Frome, Edith Wharton both directly characterizes Ethan though her description of him and indirectly characterizes Ethan through winter’s effect on him as well as his actions concerning Mattie to depict him as unassertive, immobile, and frozen. Although Ethan wishes to act romantically with Mattie, he ends up making somewhat neutral actions instead of ever acting boldly and is thereby is characterized as immobile like the winter he is trapped by. As soon as the novella begins, Wharton describes winter almost as though it is a character slowing down the people of Starkfield and thereby immobilizing the people into a frozen hypnosis. Wharton even says that instead of the weather invigorating the people, the cold instead “[retards]…

In her novella, Ethan Frome, Edith Wharton uses characterization to indicate that Mattie Silver is lively and innocent, which is refreshing to Ethan Frome after managing Zenobia’s sickliness and bothersome personality. Mattie’s last name, Silver, compares her character to the precious metal: bright, valuable, and a luxury. Ethan greatly values being in her presence, as “no moments in her company were comparable to those when [...] they walked back through the night to the farm” (Wharton 13). Additionally, just as silver reflects light, Mattie is cheerful enough to reflect her joy onto Ethan.…

When Sarah told Eric the truth about her burns, he went against her wishes by telling Mrs. Lemry, his swim coach, but it was still a good decision. Eric did this because he knew that he had to help Sarah but he did not know how to. “It boiled down to this: Somebody a whole lot smarter than me and Sarah Byrnes needs to help keep her man off her and to get a start on the life she got a glimpse of writing that letter. If I didn’t do something, Sarah Byrnes would either get dragged back by her dad, or she’d run away and be alone. The letter was clear: shaky as I was, I was her only friend. I’d rather have her hate my guts and be safe than love me and be alone” (131). This shows how deeply Eric cares about Sarah but also that he knows that he cannot help her by himself. He knows she doesn’t have much time before something bad happens to her. “’I know one thing,’ I said finally. ‘Sarah Byrnes hates no knowing worse than anything. She has to okay anything we do. And the first thing I’ll have to do is make it okay hat I’ve told you everything’” (143). When Eric says this, it shows that even though he didn’t get Sarah’s permission to tell Mrs. Lemry, he still acknowledges that if there is any ways for him to help her, she has to agree and not feel like she has lost control of her life.…

The choices a person can make in a single heart beat can affect their entire life. Life can be cruel and unforgiving. Ethan Frome written by Edith Wharton and published in 1911 is a concrete example of how life can be a tragedy. The novel is about how Ethan Frome became disabled and the choice he had made decades ago that lead to the accident—or how the locals in the story prefer to call it as Ethan’s “smash-up.” His accident was the conclusion to his escape from his miserable life with an impossible love. Unfortunately, his choice did not go as plan and permanently impacted the lives of his sick wife Zenobia, his love interest Mattie, and Ethan himself. Another example of life being cruel and unforgiving is in the film Harold and Maude released in 1971. The film displays a young man fixated with death named Harold and his short-lived relationship with a woman on the verge of becoming 80 years old, Maude. Harold just like Ethan found an impossible love interest with Maude. Maude did not want to live pass 80 and decided to die on her own terms. Life is not always sunshine and happy-ending like those in fairy tales, Ethan and Harold are completely different characters but have a few parallels in common.…

Although Frome’s actions seem to contain merit, his vacuity is what causes him to live in constant moral isolation. The author foreshadows Ethan’s fate with an allusion to a grave: “SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF ETHAN FROME AND ENDURANCE HIS WIFE…” (Wharton 70). This depicts Frome’s tragic end to a great extent, because he does not die a physical death, but rather a mental demise. Frome’s poor judgement of allowing Mattie to convince him to commit suicide resulted in him being trapped in moral isolation. Furthermore, it resulted in Mattie becoming paralyzed, while Zeena was left to tend to both individuals for the rest of their lives. Frome was left to endure the consequences of his plight. He was also left with a resentful Mattie, who realized that Frome had truly destroyed her. Frome was a “prisoner for life” (Wharton 117) and would continue to be tormented by the constant reminder of his failure and lack of…
