Baby Help
The book entitled Baby Help by Marilyn Reynolds is about a girl named Melissa Fisher, who has a baby named Cheyenne Fisher with a guy named Rudy Whitman. Although they seem like a regular couple, it’s far from normal; Melissa is constantly getting abused by Rudy, but after years of abuse she finally decides to stand up for herself and leaves him. Melissa is a strong willed person. To begin with, Melissa stands up to Rudy. For example, when Rudy tells Melissa for the second time that she thinks too much, she says, “you can’t tell me not to think, Rudy Whitman.” In addition, when Rudy tells Melissa that he doesn’t want her going to Sojourner High School she tells him that she’s going to go and she’s going to graduate. Besides that, when Rudy smacks Melissa, she smacks him back. Second, Melissa stands up to Irma, Rudy’s mom. For example, when Irma tells Melissa to watch what she says, Melissa says that she’ll say what she wants. Also, when Irma blames Melissa for Rudy’s misbehavior, Melissa tells her that she’s not responsible for his behavior. Moreover, when Irma demands that Melissa give her authorization to pick up Cheyenne from the day care, Melissa refuses. Lastly, she stops hiding the abuse. An example is, she shows Leticia the bruise Rudy gave her. Also, she admits to herself that Rudy will always find a reason to abuse her. Furthermore, she tells Bergie about the abuse. In conclusion, Melissa is a strong will person. She eventually realizes that she’s better off without Rudy and his foolish ways. Melissa ends up moving in with her mother, graduates high school, and gets a job. From her story, readers learn that if you are in an abusive relationship, it is best to leave them because you will not make any progress with them along your side.
