There is a child in my class who is really behind with her reading and phonic skills so I have recently started making her little cards with simple words on such as cat, dog, map etc for her take home every night and practice them. When she has learnt the cards I add a new word for her to learn as well as continuing with the previous cards. I only add one new word at a time as the child finds it overwhelming and difficult to have too many words she doesn’t know at a time. When I first done this I sat down with the child and showed her three cards with words on and explained to her that I wanted her to sound out and read the words on the card every night with mummy or daddy. AT this moment I sounded out and read a word on one of the cards to demonstrate what I meant. I told her I was going to ask her every Friday morning to sound out and read the words on the cards for me and if she gets them right I will add a new word for her to learn alongside the words she has and she will get three house points. On the Friday I assessed the progress she made with the cards and asked her how she felt she had done and if she thought she would remember the word and sounds on the cards. After I had been doing this for 4 weeks I assessed the progress the child had made and whether the activity was effective. The activity was effective but the quantity of cards would be ever growing as I was adding to them weekly so I decided I would take out a card after the child had practiced it and got it correct two weeks running.…

We will now review one of the Aistear videos named Planning and Organising Play. The video is produced by an infant teacher. The teacher looks at pedagogical framing and her experiences of planning and organising her own classroom. There are many excellent suggestions as to how to set up play in a class room environment which I will explain next, however there are one or two weaknesses that if I was given the opportunity I would change to this video. Overall the video is very helpful and it does give excellent advice from an experienced infant teacher that would be like gold dust to an inexperienced teacher new to this profession.…

I have chosen to review a PC game, one designed specifically for children around the ages of 3-4. It’s the Jumpstart Preschool PC game. Some people would probably disagree with me that a video games are for learning; it’s for playing and rotting the brain. I, however, think this particular game is the best thing that ever happened to my son. My son has not had the privilege of being in a daycare that taught all the basics. When I finally got him into a daycare that teaches, I got laid-off at work. I have since then have had no luck of finding another job, but I have tried several things, trying to teach my son the basic first things a toddler learns such as shapes, colors, animals, etc. I had preschool books that did okay, but his attention wouldn’t last very long. We tried flashcards, which held a little more attention than the books because they are more like a game. We also had a few toys that sang songs and taught different things, but when I found and bought the Jumpstart Preschool PC game, I knew after the first day I had found the best way to teach my son. Within the first day my son didn’t even need me helping him. I showed him how to use the mouse on my computer, and everything else the game taught him by showing him what to do step by step, then had him try it on his own. I was so amazed at how quickly he caught on that I would sit and watch him play this game and never got bored. It brought a smile to my face to know that my little boy wouldn’t miss out on his education. The Jumpstart Preschool PC game is a great way to get your child ready for school because it is easy to use, teaches your child several skills and it’s affordable.…

Throughout the first two years of life, infants develop physically, cognitively, and emotionally. Infants master new skills and accomplish many new tasks at an astounding rate. Many external influences affect the success of a child’s developmental progress. Warm and intimate infant-parent relationships and interactions are especially vital in nurturing an infant’s development. Since development often follows a similar path, one can conclude much about a child’s abilities by simply looking at a photograph. This image illustrates a mother with her daughter, who appears to be approximately 18 months old. The mother is interacting with her daughter through a game of peekaboo. The child is actively engaged with the game that she and her mother are…

At the surface, the letter Lord Chesterfield writes to his son appears to simply offer his son simple sound advice with the intention to help his son. It seems that he is trying to give his son this advice in a friendly manner as opposed to a father giving his son advice. However, upon closer analysis of what Chesterfield writes, one can see how he is actually subtly reminding his son of his obligations and duties. Using strategies such as understatements, diction, and rhetorical questions, Chesterfield subtly leaves reminders to his son that shows what Chesterfield holds as high values: obedience and reputation.…

The early years of the child are spent using all of his powers of observation and Dr. Montessori felt that this was the ideal period in the child’s life to introduce him to equipment that would sharpen his senses and facilitate his comprehension of the many impressions he receives through them. When a child is cognitively delayed caregivers/teachers must try to incorporate the child’s level of ability (Allen, Paasche, Langford, and Nolan, 2006). Several ways to help the child during free play time are the caregivers/teachers have to break down the activity, and go through it step by step in order to help the child complete the task (Allen et al., 2006). The teacher must try to use different types of activities such as, music, movement, and sensory materials. Help the child in these different activities by showing them and interacting with them (Allen et al., 2006). The materials should be easy to use and keeps the child’s interest such as, easy puzzles, crayons, and pictures of everyday things (Allen et al., 2006). An example of an activity the teacher can do is Sand and Water Play, where the child can first hand see the changes of the materials used. They can also make their own hypothesis, this way they open their imagination and start to think (Koralek, Newman, Colker, 1995).…
