1b What are structure words? How are they different from content words? Support your answer with examples (10)
English words fall into two broad types; those that belong in the dictionary like "storm" and "confabulate", called content words and those that belong in the grammar like "of" and "the", called structure words. There are a lot of difference between structure words and content words.

Structure Words:

* They are best explained in the grammar, i.e. in terms of how they fit into sentences. e.g.: "the" is a definite article goes with nouns. * They are very limited in number, consisting of 220 or so in English. * Their frequency is very high. e.g.: all the top ten for English and 45% of the top 100 are structure words. * They are used more in spoken language. * They are less likely to be preceded by a pause in the speech, e.g.: "I hate..... the referee", perhaps because there are less of them to choose from. *

So and Wang (1996) examined the acoustic analysis of all Cantonese vowels. In addition, he showed acoustic differences in short and long term vowels. Cantonese vowels include four short vowels and seven long vowels. The four short vowels are [ɪ], [ɐ], [ʊ], and [ɵ] and the seven long vowels are [i], [y], [ɛ], [œ], [a], [ɔ], and [u]. Two participants were instructed to read 1863 words in Cantonese which was completed in three sessions to avoid fatigue. The findings showed that short vowels tend to be more centralized in all positions within the vowel space. Figure 1 demonstrates the first and second formants of the Cantonese vowels. Limitations included small number of…

Out of all eight of the parts of speech, the verb, the noun, the pronoun, the adjective, the adverb, the preposition, the conjunction, and the interjection, the ones that I remember the most are the verb and the noun. I am not quite sure how such basic ideas of language can be so complicated to actually explain. My previous days of schooling were definitely not the most challenging or puzzling. So how is it that I use these in depth concepts in daily conversations? I honestly think that in my earlier school days, we simply discussed all of these eight parts of our language and never actually were shown how they are all connected.…

Content words are the key words of a sentence. They are the important words that carry the meaning or sense. Structure words are not very important words. They are small, simple words that make the sentence correct grammatically. They give the sentence its correct form or "structure". If you remove the structure words from a sentence, you will probably still understand the sentence. If you remove the content words from a sentence, you will not understand the sentence. The sentence has no sense or meaning.…
