Azúcar Negra Analysis
I chose to do my album review on the album Azúcar Negra. Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso, also known as La Guarachera de Cuba, was born October 21, 1925 in Havana Cuba. Celia Cruz died July 16, 2003 in Fort Lee, New Jersey, United States having never stepped foot on Cuban ground since exiled from Cuba by Fidel Castro. Celia Cruz’s music falls under the genres Guaracha, son, rumba, bolero and salsa. Her voice was discovered in Cuba around the age of 20 and she joined the Sonora Matancera until taking her own route in México and later on in the United States. The overall album, Azúcar Negra, has an upbeat and fun rhythm as it incorporates the use of trumpets, conga, bongo drum, piano, claves, maracas and el güiro. The instruments I listed, are commonly heard of in cuban music, especially salsa. …show more content…
“De La Habana Hasta Aguí” begins with a solo guitar playing and then is joined by el güiro, the maracas, the clave, and a choir. After the song goes on for a few verses, Celia Cruz joins in singing with a soft tone. Then, as Celia Cruz continues sining verses, the conga and bongo drums begin to play throughout the remainder of the song. Contrary to most of the album, “De La Habana Hasta Aguí”, has more of a relaxing feel to it. The second song I chose is “Azúcar Negra”. “Azúcar Negra” beings with the fast beat of the conga joined by the bongo drums and el güiro. After the instruments are playing together, there is a short break and then Celia Cruz starts singing on key with the piano, trumpets, and the original instruments used in the beginning of song. The song picks up a faster more upbeat rhythm. The choir joins in resonating everything Celia Cruz sings. Celia Cruz sings then the choir sings as they take turns throughout the song. The song ends with the choir and trumpets,

For centuries Spanish composers were overlooked due to the simple fact that they were never given the opportunity to become legendary. However, the Spanish composer and famous pianist Alicia de Larrocha made certain that she, as well as her fellow Spanish composers, were not overlooked any longer. Beginning in the early 1920’s, she began her extremely successful life and accomplished every one of her dreams and aspirations before she passed away in 2009. Alicia’s success can be exemplified through her personal relationships with those around her, by her distinct playing style, and the astonishing way she overcame obstacles she was faced with throughout her life that lead to the abundance of rewards she received.…

My essay will be about the tragedy of Selena Quintanilla, Selena was a famous Mexican/American singer and song writer. Selena Quintanilla-Perez was born in Lake Jackson, Texas on April 16. Selena's brother, Abraham Quintanilla and Selena's sister Suzette were little kids when Selena was born. Abraham always had a passion for music, In the late 50's and early 60's he was part of the group Los Dinos. When his children were very young, he began to teach them an instrument, “A.B.” the bass and Suzette the drums. Suzette at first HATED the idea of playing the drums. When Selena was just 3 years old, she demanded to know why her father was leaving her out of the music. Abraham simply said she was too young. Right then Selena showed him she was not too young, she showed him her own instrument, her voice. She sang Blue Moon, Abraham couldn't believe what a beautiful sound he heard. By the time Selena was 6, she was already singing like a pro in English and in Spanish, even though she didn't speak the language, alongside her brother, sister, and father. When Selena was 9, her father started the group Selena Y Los Dinos. The group's first performances were in Papagallos, the Quintanilla family's restaurant opened in 1980. Everyone who saw her, even at that young age, knew she was going to be a star someday. Soon the restaurant fell and the Quintanilla family went bankrupt, they were out on the streets without a roof over their head. The family moved to Corpus Christi, Texas where they piled into an old bus with all their musical equipment. They played everywhere they could, on streets, at weddings. Soon all the hard work paid off, Selena even said in some interviews that when she first started playing it was to put food on the table. Selena recorded her first album in 1984 under the…
