Ayala Land Sustainability Report 2008

Linking Arms towards a Sustainable Future
The dream of a sustainable future begins with actions rooted in the present. At Ayala Land, we realize that to make a difference, the crucial strides towards a sustainable tomorrow must be made today as global warming and environmental problems loom over the horizon. Now is the time to act with utmost urgency and focus for the sake of our children and future generations. In 2007, we defined the terms of sustainable land use and development, drawing from our rich heritage of environmental enhancement and impact reduction initiatives, and mindful of the specific challenges that face our environment, economy, and society. We then took a major step forward in 2008 by defining a Sustainability Framework that will ensure that the way we do business is responsive, transparent, and aligned with our promise of enhancing land and enriching lives for more people, for generations to come. This is the reason behind the theme of this year’s report. We want to communicate the necessary linkages that underpin our goal of providing a sustainable future even as we continue to fine-tune our metrics and targets that drive our various sustainability programs, projects, and activities. Apart from the partnerships we continue to make at the local and national levels with both public and private institutions, internal alignment is crucial. Only in this manner can the company commit to a comprehensive and coherent sustainability work plan and scale up the measure of our positive impact to a significant level. With the global financial crisis and the continuing effects of climate change, we realize that while we remain competitive, we must continue to raise the bar, set more aggressive goals, and deliver innovative products and services to improve our sustainability performance. As a business leader and the first real-estate company in the Philippines to approach sustainability as a management tool, it is incumbent upon Ayala Land to influence and lead stakeholders in our sector to recognize, appreciate and take the necessary steps towards sustainable development.

About the Report
In 2008, we published our first sustainability report. Recognizing the need to develop a business direction focused on sustainability, we released a self-declared C-level report covering our performance in 2007 with a pledge to publish a more in-depth report the following year. As promised, this year’s report is in accordance with GRI level-B guidelines. It includes our management approach to integrating sustainability into our policies, structure, and day-to-day operations. This year’s report covers our sustainability performance for 2008, with a total of 23 performance indicators across our developments and properties managed by Ayala Property Management Corporation in Makati, Fort Bonifacio Development Corporation in Taguig, Cebu Holdings, Inc., and Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corporation in Cebu and Negros Occidental, and two strategic land bank developments in Canlubang and Bataan. Of the 23 indicators, 13 are environmental indicators, reflecting Ayala Land’s mindset of preserving the resources critical to our mandate. There were no instances of noncompliance...
