    1. A double blind study was conducted measuring the effects of ritanserin on cocaine addiction. Both a placebo and ritanserin group were established. Both groups were given cocaine cues while measurements of their heart rate, skin temperature, and skin resistance were taken in two sessions, four weeks apart. Self reports (quantitative scales of qualitative characteristics such as mood, craving intensity, etc.) were also taken in order to determine levels of craving. Ritanserin groups showed a significant difference in decreasing skin temperature and qualitative self reports. However, the results were not solid enough or free of confounding variables to determine that ritanserin is an effective method of reducing cocaine craving.…

offrey Robertson’s non-fiction text, The Justice Game, is a clear example of a composer deliberately selecting and emphasising various facts and events in order to influence a reader. Through The Justice Game, Robertson presents his perspective of the British legal system, which he believes to be archaic and unjust, with too much potential for the transgression of human rights, through an evidently biased, subjective view, using the techniques of selection and omission to highlight various arguments to persuade readers. The Trials of Oz recounts the obscenity trials of the editors of Oz Magazine, highlighting the issues of freedom of speech and censorship, as well as the overarching concept of conflicting perspectives which are inherently present in every event or situation. The conflicting perspectives that are present in this case are instantly clear, as the avant-garde editors of Oz are challenged by the significantly more conservative character of Judge Argyle, whom Robertson views as a personification of the legal system. Judge Argyle, who presided over the case, is immediately presented in an unfavourable light, characterised as a conservative, out-of-touch and perhaps backward man, who Robertson implies sees his judgeship as “a career consolation for the Tory MP he had tried several times to become”. In his recount of the trials of Oz, Robertson expresses disdain for Judge Argyle, describing him in a condescending, sarcastic tone, effectively mocking how old-fashioned Argyle is- for example, highlighting his lack of familiarity of contemporary colloquial, “revolutionary” language, when Judge Argyle confuses the term “right on” with “write on”. In contrast, a more progressive value system and way of thinking is epitomised in the editors of Oz, which Robertson emphasises through pop culture references, such as to the iconic singer Bob Dylan, to appeal to a progressive audience. Hence through The Trials of Oz, Robertson clearly establishes his perspective,…

What is conflict? Why is it good to have a positive attitude during conflict? Why, for so long have humans cruelly mistreated each other if “they are all equal?” Conflict is a fight, battle, or struggle, especially a prolonged struggle (dictionary.com). Anne Frank gives an insight on what life was it was like to not know if you would live for the next day. In Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, Anne is living through the turmoil of all the jewish people as her and her family hid from the Nazi’s. Although the situation she is in is horrifying she manages to stay positive minded. Another story, Dear Miss Breed, a story where all Japanese people in the United States, citizens or not, were placed in internment camps because of the air attack on Pearl Harbor. Miss Breed, a children’s librarian at the San Diego Public Library, gave kids that were put in these camps hope by donating books to them and also by writing letters back and forth to them trying to give them some positivity even in their time of crisis. Both of these stories show that having a positive attitude is the best response to conflict, especially in time of war.…

Indirect characterization is when the author makes the reader use his own judgment to decide what a character is like. In “Thank You, M’am”, by Langston Hughes, Mrs Jones was described as a large black women with a large purse. She was decoded as very stern by holding him tightly and saying “Pick up my pocketbook”(Hughes 86 ). Also an example from the short story was when “Mrs Jones stopped, jerked him around in front of her, put a half nelson about his neck, and continued to drag him up the street”(Hughes 86). In “Thank You, M’am”, by Langston Hughes, the author uses indirect characterization to show Mrs Jones’ attitude and personality in the short story.…

The Montgomery Bus Boycott was a political and social protest campaign started in 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, intended to oppose the city's policy of racial segregation on its public transit system. Radioactive decay is the process by which an atomic nucleus of an unstable atom loses energy by emitting ionizing particles (ionizing radiation). There are many different types of radioactive decay (see table below). A decay, or loss of energy, results when an atom with one type of nucleus, called the parent radionuclide, transforms to an atom with a nucleus in a different state, or to a different nucleus containing different numbers of protons and neutrons. Either of these products is named the daughter nuclide. In some decays the parent and daughter are different chemical elements, and thus the decay process results in nuclear transmutation (creation of an atom of a new element).…

I never knew what it was like to feel complete desperation. I never knew the emptiness of loneliness and loss until she was gone. The moment when you feel your whole world crashing in around you, and your whole being shaken with remorse; the sheer terror of heart-wrenching pain. I always thought moments like these were rare. That desperation and emptiness were not things I would ever have to experience. I would hear stories about death and war, horrific atrocities far away, but I never thought I’d have to endure them. My life was perfect. Well-put together. Full of love and joy. Nothing bad could ever happen. Moments of pain were a stranger. Until the day she was gone, until the moment where I found pain right where it resided, in the face of my dead mother.…
