Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Mammography has proved to be a vital procedure in improving the quality of a woman’s life. It is a type of medical imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system to examine the breasts. The procedure called mammogram, is used to aid in the early detection of unexpected breast cancer, cysts, lumps, and other masses that can be found in the breast (Andolina & Lille, 2011).This radiographic procedure is not only limited to women but also to males. According to Brown, Leffall, Jr., & Platt (2003), 1% of men in the United States have undergone mammography and has been found out to be positive to breast disease. Mammography imaging started in 1960, and by 1976, mammography as a screening device became a standard practice and its value in diagnosis was recognized.
