In our discussion on Friday, no one else read the book so I was stuck trying to piece together what they knew, what happened in the book, and how to write a decent report on what has happened so far. So far in the book, we read about Jacob living in the retirement home and coming in contact with a fellow who claims he carried water for elephants. Elderly Jacob flashes back to when he was twenty-three. His parents had just died in a car accident; he skipped out on his veterinarian final exam, and hops a train out of Norwich in hopes of finding work somewhere new. The train is for the “Benzini Brother’s Most Spectacular Show on Earth”. He joins the circus, does a variety of petty jobs until he lands in the circus…

Translating a novel into a film is not as easy as one may have thought. Due to time constraints, characters and/or scenes may be eliminated and therefore may not have the same impact as a novel, but this is not always the case. The Help written by Kathryn Stockett and published in 2009. The film version was released on August 10, 2011 by DreamWorks and directed by Tate Taylor. The cast includes Emma Scott (Skeeter Phelan), Viola Davis (Aibileen Clark), Bryce Dallas Howard (Hilly Holbrook), and Octavia Spencer (Minny Jackson). The Help in both forms is riveting and heartbreaking, as well as a racial awakening for some.…

Since the beginning of the 21st century, western countries have suffered a number of terror attacks by Islamic extremists. For example, the World Trade Center attack in America on September 11, 2001 called 9.11 and the Paris terror attacks on November 13, 2015 called 11.13 are the two biggest terror attacks which can be thought of. 9.11 is the most famous terror attack in the world carried out by Islamic extremist group al-Queda. They did suicide attacks on several important buildings in United States by hijacking airplanes, and more than three thousand people are died during their act (HISTORY). 11.13 is also a famous terror attack carried out in the center of Paris by the islamic extremists having guns and bombs for suicide attacks. When I was younger, I compared my grandfather to that of an elephant, 13 feet tall, 15,400 pounds, and a heart weighing up to 46 pounds. A big, broad, vulnerable creature, towering over the rest of the family. Ten months of hairy cell leukemia, a rare strand of the already rare strand of chronic lymphotic leukemia claiming his body made him so small, just skin and bones. My best friend sat 205 miles away over Skype and asked: “How do you get rid of an elephant in a room?” I imagined an elephant squeezing itself like a balloon into my nine-foot-tall living room. “You have to eat it,” she said, “Do you know how eat an elephant? One bite at a time.”…

The movie World Trade Center is about the second terrorist attack on the World Trade Center which occurred September 11, 2001. Over three thousand lives were lost along with first responders (fire, police, EMS, medical, military, etc.). The two tallest buildings, known as the twin towers and several other buildings were completely destroyed. This would become the second of its kind of attack in America’s history. The first occurred “Friday, February 26, 1993, when Middle Eastern terrorism had arrived on American soil—with a bang” (“FBI 100 First Strike”, 2008). Forrest Gump would have optimistically said, “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get" (Zemeckis, 1994). One of the rescue workers commented on going into the scene, “God was using the cloud of debris, smoke and dust to shield what they were walking into.” This truly was the type of devastation that would be difficult to plan for, but in hind sight several steps of action could have been taken to at least minimize the damage.…

In Ernest Hemingway’s short story “Hills Like White Elephants,” Hemingway surprisingly engages the reader with ambiguous dialogue and character detail necessitating use of extensive symbolism within the setting to encourage the readers active participation. The glaring lack of key details concerning the characters, an American man and a girl named Jig, and their disjointed conversation provide little real substance to comprehend the conflict at hand. In trying to determine what operation is being discussed this statement provides little clue, “I know you wouldn’t mind it, Jig. It’s really not anything. It’s just to let the air in” (Hemingway 592). If anything this ambiguous statement promotes further confusion. So it is necessary for the reader…

Hi, I’m Cody Jones. I’m really excited because today is the big day! My 2nd grade class and I are going to the Mythical Creature Zoo. We, here at the Mythical Creature Academy, are in the process training to be zookeepers there. At the zoo, there are SO many cool creatures! There are: hydras, Minotaurs, Hippogriffs, a unicorn petting zoo, mermaid aquarium with Kelpies and a Kraken, a Sphinx, and even a Centaur. Because Miss Taylor is such a good teacher, she taught us ALL about the cool creatures. Some things she taught me were: to not pet the Hippogriffs until they trust us, and that mermaid tears become aquamarine jewels! I think I’m set for this amazing trip to the MCZ!…
