Autobiography Of Collage
Teaching Brenda for three years; Advanced Geometry in 8th grade, Pre-Calculus in 10th grade, and AP Calculus in 11th grade, is a true pleasure as a teacher. Brenda's greatest academic strength is her ability to break down the difficult mathematics into manageable steps that all of her classmates understand. Last year, Brenda decided to create her own tutoring session for her fellow classmates in Pre-Calculus. Often expressing to me that the class was her favorite class, the content was easy for her to understand, but she also understood that many of her peers were struggling. Every morning before school, she would assist anyone willing to come for assistance. I often tell my students that sometimes they only need to hear it from someone else to understand the material fully. Brenda took this statement to heart wanting to explain the mathematics in different ways until her classmates understood. As a tutor, she demonstrated patience and understanding with students who couldn't grasp the material as quickly as she could. I never suggested …show more content…
Born to a teenage single mother, it was a struggle to adjust to her new life. Brenda faced additional stressors including the family's economic struggles, culture shock, and being caught between two cultures and languages. Brenda describes feeling confused and scared during this time period, but that the introduction of her step-father gave her a true sense of "family". During this time she describes struggling with English, but that mathematics was her joy. Her love of mathematics continues to this day as she often tells me that she truly loves math. Through determination and focus, Brenda learned to adjust along with being proud to speak Spanish and English fluently. She speaks admiringly of her mother's struggle to make her life better and is committed to reaching her full potential. Brenda is a young lady who has faced adversity head on and beat

The teacher sent us, Mark and Sebastian to work at a table in the back of the classroom. I think she did that so we would not interfere with the rest of the class. We worked on math and writing. We did not have any problems solving the math questions. Instead the students seemed to be happy that I could help them individually. Both Mark and Sebastian were quiet and respectful. Mark had concentration problems; for example, while we were doing the math assignment that he had from last week, he suddenly wanted to talk about his toys or any other thing but math. Sebastian on the other hand, was quiet and seemed like he has hearing problems.…

Another teacher teaches by working problems out and showing students examples, then makes them work the problem while she works it on the board. This is helpful in classes like math and physics. She does well in teaching the information, and making sure everyone understands. Telling students how to do a problem step-by- step helps them have a clear concise understanding of the steps to complete when working the problems or equations. This attempt is helping students who learn by watching something be done or listening to how to do something all at once. Once she feels they understand she makes…

When I first started at Napa College, I knew that getting involved was going to be very important. However, I didn't know it was going to be a lot more complicated on my behalf to do so. This is because, when I first came to Napa Valley college, I had also just obtained my first job. The job which would allow me to help sustain myself and help my family financially. I was not used to this type of schedule when I first came into Napa College. This Is because I didn't know how to manage my time, and simply didn't know what to make as my major primary. I was confused whether to make school or make work a primary. So, I ended up making them both as a priory, which meant dedicating half and half to each. Later on, I found out that I didn't have…

Throughout high school, I was involved in multiple extracurricular activities, including, but not limited to, Friends of Rachel and Desert Vista Peer Tutoring (DVPT). During my time as the secretary of Friends of Rachel, I managed all the attendance and arranged all meeting times for the club. I especially enjoyed being the receptionist for Friends of Rachel because through my tasks, I was able to develop my organizational and planning skills. Meanwhile, during the two days per week I spent at DVPT, I tutored hundreds of students in subjects ranging from mathematics, science, history, English, and Spanish. I, also, took on the role of receptionist for DVPT where I facilitated the entire tutoring center by pairing tutors and tutees, marking…

Over the last few years, I have spent 2-4 hours a week helping students with math. I know tutoring seems like a trivial task, intended strictly to improve a student’s grade, but in my opinion, it is much more than that. I enjoy tutoring not only because I love the subject of mathematics, but also because I feel as if I am truly having an impact on the person I am tutoring. According to George Washington Carver, “Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.” I believe this to be true; I believe that those who struggle in classes are missing a valuable opportunity to seize the gift of universal education. Tutoring is important to me because I am given the opportunity to help people truly take advantage of that…

As time elapses, I find myself appreciating the conditions brought about by my past. All my life I have been engulfed within the vivid Mexican culture that was taught to me within a single parent household; one of which held an immense military presence. I was molded by these circumstances, and have been taught vital lessons that aid me in my pursuit of a better life and future. My upbringing is a daily reminder of my roots; where I come from, who I come from, why I became the person I am today, and the reason I want to pursue this significant path to commence the journey to strive for a higher education.…

My nephew was failing math in the second grade last year. He barely understood the lessons his teacher discussed in class. Shy as he was, he always hesitated to ask for help. His teacher would hand out class work for them to work on, but he barely got anything done. By the end of class, she would have home work assigned for them to do, but he rarely turned them in. His teacher and parents grew more concerned about him as the days past without any progress. I believed that I could help him, so I offered my assistance.…

My goals in joining peer tutoring were to have an easy term project assignment and spending one hour each week for studying with my friends in an enjoyable atmosphere, but after a couple of sessions, I discovered that peer tutoring was more than that. With peer tutoring, my motivation for studying has increased a significant amount as well as my grades. The program didn’t only provide me academic success, but it also thought me the best studying skills that I will use for a lifetime. Throughout the program, I experienced both being a tutor and a tutee. Both of them have benefited me in different ways. Last semester I had a classmate that didn’t have time to go through the assigned notes for math that was assigned. I felt that if it was me I would want someone to help me. So we started in boxing each other each night and I would try and explain to her step by step how to do the homework. Mind you she was a single parent working and going to school raising 4 kids. I felt bad because she was in danger of being kicked out of school. I put myself in her shoes so I helped as much as I could and with tutoring she passed the class.…
