Since day one that I can remember, my parents have always been divorced. Sometimes it became a big problem in our family because of the constant arguments between them. The court felt it wasn’t fair for my brothers and I and came to the conclusion that the children will see a counselor one a week. At that time I was so young I didn’t know exactly what that meant and apparently had no other choice but to go. Little did I know that it would change my perception forever.…

My father’s parents were born in a small village in the Peloponnese. They were kind and humble people that eventually made their way to Athens. My mother’s parents were born in Kafkaso, a town in Minor Asia, which at that time belonged to Greece. With the war of 1921, the Turks forced my mother’s parents to flee to Athens. They were wealthy and proud, as were many Pontian Greeks at that time. Both of my parents were born in Athens in the fifties. My mother left Athens in 1969, America bound and my father followed soon after.…

I have come a long way down my road of knowledge and learning of English throughout my life and it has taken me places and shown me things I would have never expected when I first started out on this long journey, and it includes things that most other student’s do not. I have learned so much, so fast and it has taken me far from home and around the world. While most of the people I know have traveled the same road their whole lives and have grown up in very similar ways, my experiences tell a whole different story.…

When I first saw in the syllabus the type of paper we would be writing for this course I thought about what culture means to me. What was the culture of my family? Where did we come from? How did we end up in Virginia? How did we end up believing some of the things we believe? To me culture was basically how I was raised—my behaviors, beliefs, values, and ideas cultivated during my youth and its evolvement as I grew into an adult. This truly was to be a very interesting and involved quest for information. Though I attempted to use websites such as www.genealogy.com and www.ancestry.com, I found most of the information from a couple of the adults in my family. Adults? I, too, am an adult, but in my family, age comes before everything; and because I am younger, I am treated as such and am expected to behave a certain manner towards the elders in my family. So begins the learning of the nature of my familial circle!…

So everything—my reading, writing, and other experiences— started with my birth on October 6, 1996; well okay, not really—it didn’t start with my birth. They, my reading and writing experiences, started with preschool, which is the same for most people. These two skills are an integral part of my life; I use them almost every day. However, that doesn’t mean I have to like both of them. I did not like reading very much then, writing even more so; essays and paragraphs and essays and some more essays were painful. My writing skills, to say the very least, were not very developed. As time passed, however, my views toward writing and reading began to change and my ability to write evolved. My reminiscing begins with preschool and there, my first encounter with writing.…

Raised in a catholic household, learning about God and practicing my religion was done regularly. Going to a catholic school played a major role in my childhood by strengthening my beliefs in God and made me see God in different ways. My religion guided me with all the problems that I had as a child but one. As a ten year old boy I questioned God and his actions. I began questioning God and my faith when my family received heartbreaking news one afternoon following my mother’s ultrasound. It was declared that my unborn sister was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (a weak heart). My family of four whom was preparing to become a family of five was truly devastated.…
