What is today’s authenticity? Our life standards have been improved a lot since the Industrial Revolution, which opened a new era of modern technology, however, by the same time, it also changes some basic concepts in our daily life and some of the transformations are not so satisfactory. From my point of view, the concept of “authenticity” has been challenged in many different ways and brings about some very troublesome problems to society. Since we all live in a real world which is based on relationships between people, the virtual world on internet, for example, has interfere with those kinds of regular connections. I believe we should keep emphasizing the importance of the authenticity and do not recognize those virtual stuff as a new kind of authenticity. As topics raised by Sherry Turkle, a professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology at MIT, in her book , “authenticity” is one of the most basic issues related to technology advances and everyone should consider how to treat it. Being Authenticity means less than old days in some ways today because of the amazing speed of the modern media’s development. Several decades ago, the only way to get in touch with one’s dear friend far away at once was give him/her a call, however, it would worked only if both of them have telephones around which seemed not so realistic at that time. Nevertheless, at present days which mobile phones are more popular than fixed ones, the communication method of giving a phone call to each other is applied less and less in many circumstances. In chapter 10 of Turkle’s book, “No need to call”, some teenagers she interviewed even said people hate the telephone but “it’s all texting and messaging” (Turkle, 187). Due to the availability of superb communication devices and software, requirements of authenticity have been lowered, or in other words, people access to authenticity in some different approaches today.
