Authentic Leadership Style
It seems after careful analysis of literature the research presented in this paper points to authentic leadership as being the superior leadership style and is associated with the most positive outcomes. However this style of leadership is more so suited when used in correlation with other leadership styles i.e. transactional and charismatic and differs from the other leadership styles by possessing mechanisms of multiplicity. Charismatic and transactional leaders can be seen as authentic but authentic is not defined as being any one particular style of leader per se(Avolio & Gardner, 2005). The appropriate leadership style to use is dependent on the changing climate of the organisation i.e. in a dynamic work environment, charismatic leadership is the preferred style for effective outcomes. Creative and innovative work is demanding, resource intensive and requiring a high level of persuasion. The tasks developed in this kind of work are uncertain, risky and involve unforeseen processes, and as a result, setbacks and disruptions are likely to occur. As innovative work is complex, it demands a leader that is able to be agile and adapt to the ever changing circumstances of a dynamic organisation (Paulsen et al., 2009).     Authentic leadership deals partly with the relationship with oneself as a leader. Following and relying on one’s own instincts and judgements to lead others and do what is best for an organization. Luthans and Avolio (2003) as mentioned by Northouse, provided traits that may influence a leader to become an authentic leader; “confidence, hope, optimism and resilience” (p.265).     The topic of discussion for this week is “Discovering Your Authentic Leadership”. When discovering your Authentic Leadership, you have to look in your inner self and be the best and stand out from other leaders. No one can be an authentic leader by trying to imitate someone else characteristics of becoming a great leader. The respect level is way higher when you are yourself instead of trying to be like another leader. Being authentic doesn’t mean you are perfect, it means to build the leader’s legitimacy through relationships with followers that are honest, value follower input, and build on an ethical foundation. Being a leader is in all of us as stated by Young &Rubicam chairman and CEO Ann Fudge, said, “All of us have the spark of leadership in us, whether it is in business, in government, oars a nonprofit volunteer”. The characteristic of a leader are learned not given you have to experience failure and success at the same time you are progressing to be a strong and authentic leader. When discovering your authentic leadership it involves a huge commitment and the understanding of yourself. You have to develop yourself and create a blueprint on how to be an effective leader. Your life story has an effect on how strong you will be as you embark on being a leader, everyone has a story and most leaders remember when they didn’t have, or someone they really wanted there wasn’t there for support, role models they looked up too as well. You have to realize your potential and that life goes on you have to live you have to make decisions in life to accommodate you in the future.
