Australian Economy Disadvantages
HISTORICAL LINKS
Previously, Australia has had many links with Indonesia which have helped to build our economy and to strengthen the ties between our nation and Indonesia.
These links are through defence, aid and migration. The links through defence include the development of a counter-terrorism security cooperation after the Bali bombings in 2002. This was further made a priority in 2014, when the threat of ISIS was a concern for both nations.
Aid efforts that began in the 1950s include the AIDCO Program (Australia-Indonesia Development Cooperation: sourced from Skwirk), that continued to assist Indonesia with recovery for the late 1990s financial crisis and security issues. Links between Australia and Indonesia have numerous advantages for both countries mutually, however there are possible disadvantages that can arise. The historical and current links between the two nations include aid, defence, migration, tourism and trade. The advantages of aid are that we can strengthen our security by helping others and creating alliances with Indonesia that will ensure a positive future for our nation. However, providing aid does bring with it some disadvantages as it is not cheap to provide humanitarian aid. As it was previously stated, Australian aid to Indonesia is costing us into the late $300 million. Defence is usually a very positive link to have with another country as you can support them and they can support you in times of need, providing an extra sense of security. The only disadvantage of a link through defence would again be the cost to go and defend, but also the cost of Australian lives. Migration has its advantages as it helps to build a more multicultural nation, however it can pose a threat on the wellbeing of the country if we end up with irresponsible people migrating to Australia. Tourism is excellent for both countries. Indonesia is among the most common to visit Australia and likewise Australia for Indonesia which is providing mutual economic benefits. On the other hand, terrorist attacks and issues can arise if careless people begin to be reckless and cause trouble. Lastly, trade has so many benefits for both nations, it boosts the economy, builds stronger diplomatic relationships, establishes alliances, and about the only disadvantage of trade is if the goods being exported are not selling as expected or aren’t being used for the correct reasons, which is usually a doubted
