Austenville Magpies Case Study
Wentworthville Magpies resisted a second half fight-back by the North Sydney Bears to record a 27-20 victory.

Magpies halfback Beau Henry blew the Bears off the park early on when he scored three tries in quick succession before the 25 minute mark, and slotted a late field goal to seal the win.

The Bears were guilty of poor ball control and ill-discipline for the entire 80 minutes, which gave the Magpies too many point scoring opportunities due lack of field position.

The Magpies were gifted two points on the stroke of halftime thanks to an indiscretion in front of the posts, which made the score 18-4 heading into the break.

The Bears entered the second half with added enthusiasm and effort, however being on the wrong side of a lob-sided error count certainly did not help their cause.

Joel Reddy planted the ball down in the left corner just five minutes into the half, only for John Olives flick pass to be correctly ruled forward.

The forward pass did not hinder their defensive attitude, as they rushed up on tackle one to force a costly Magpies error, before Walker picked up the crumbs and planted the ball down.

Olive helped decrease the deficit to just four in the 54th minute after he used his speed to get on the outside of a Magpies defender, which allowed him to pass to an unmarked Reddy who finished well in the left corner.

Constant errors halted the Bears momentum, and this allowed the Magpies to increase their lead to 22-14 after Vai Toutai powered through to score on the right

February 7th, 2010. Super Bowl XLIV. Four years post Hurricane Katrina. As smoke cleared from “The Who” halftime concert, Thomas Morstead, the kicker for the New Orleans Saints, set to kick the ball off to the Indianapolis Colts to start the third quarter. With the Saints down 10 to 6, and Indianapolis’s Chad Simpson standing in his own end zone ready to return the kick off, Saints Head Coach, Sean Payton, called one of the gutsiest plays in the super bowl era of football. Thomas Morstead standing at his own 30 yard line executed the only on-side kick before the fourth quarter in NFL history. The ball traveled 15 yards before being touched by Hank Basket, an Indianapolis Colts player, who could not make a clean recovery. The ball ended up at the bottom of a pile of bodies all fighting for it. It took over a minute for the officials to clear bodies out of the pile and determine who definitively recovered the on-side kick. Chris Reis, a safety for the New Orleans Saints, came out of the pile victorious. The Saints would subsequently score a touchdown, taking their first lead of the game.…

Everyone on the oval could feel the ground shake as Christy edged closer and closer time slowed down the two forwards however, left a slight gap in there wall like defence. But Christy was no winger her body was too big to squeeze through the gap. Christy collided with the left and right shoulder of the two defenders the sound was indescribable it was like Loki and Thor going at each other in a marvels movie. The ball slipped out of Chrissy’s grasp, and came rolling to a stop on a fresh patch of grass. After possession was handed over to the opposition in the scrum. Ash burn high began one of their notorious counter attacks which was to draw defenders into the middle of the field whilst their wingers became unmarked leaving a gaping hole in any defending team. The only floor in this straight is that they have been doing the same move all season and somehow it still managed to get us almost every time, but this time I was ready.
