The Godly Father
Atticus, a single dad trying to raise two kids, stands as a great example of a Christ-like figure. Through the novel, readers get a glimpse of how they should treat others from Atticus’s actions. Atticus represents some of the godly standards of living in this novel. Atticus represents his Christ-like figure to the citizens. He also sets some high standards as a father as well. He shows his likeness to Christ through his love for his kids, his willingness to help those in need, and his kindness to everyone in the town of Maycomb.
Atticus love for his kids is a great example of a Christ-like figure. He shows his love throughout the story. When Jem and Scout feel depressed and discouraged, Atticus always tells his kids how much he loves them, and makes them feel better. Because Atticus remains kind to people of the town, the townsfolk remain kind to him. Readers can see his kindness when Atticus lets little Dill stay the night. Atticus also shows his compassion when he lets Walter Cunningham over for dinner because the boy’s family does not have enough money for food. Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Atticus holds this verse to heart as he continually gives kindness to the citizens of Maycomb.
