Just As a Parent Should Be
Being a parent involves lots of responsibility. Managing a job, a house, and two kids all without a mother seems quite a difficult job. Well, Atticus Finch, in Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, sets an inordinate example of a wonderful father. Atticus went to law school to become a lawyer. He settled in Maycomb County with his two children, Jem and Scout. His wife had died previously, so the responsibility of total provision fell on his shoulders and their servant, Calpurnia. Atticus was a very patient, protective, and passionate father.
Throughout the story, we see Jem and Scout fight, and get into trouble. Scout struggles with a temper, and always enjoys asking lots of questions. Atticus calmly takes a compassionate and patient approach to handling issues. He gets down to their level and speaks in a way that they can understand. Amazingly, he is able to resolve problems, big or small, with love and patience, while listening to everything they have to say. One example when Jem started to raise his voice and get flustered, Atticus said, ‘“ Whoa, son.” so gently that I was greatly heartened.”’ (96) No matter the conflict, Atticus maintains a gentle and patient attitude towards his kids that only results in grater love and respect for him.

He intentionally makes time to spend quality time with Scout and Jem, and he has a deep passion for the equality of the blacks. Being a lawyer, he was assigned a case to defend Tom Robinson, a gentle and kind slave, from an accusation of rape on a poor teenage girl. Atticus truly believed in Tom’s innocence, and diligently made his case for Tom’s freedom. When the jury determined Tom guilty, seemingly on a prejudice basis, and sent him to prison, Atticus still did not give up hope, “Not time to worry yet, Scout. We’ve got a good chance.” (293) Despite the odds, he still showed passion, and maintained a hopeful outlook on Tom’s
