Summary The following report introduces the main reasons of air pollution in Beijing - Coal burning and auto emissions. Also, the report analyzes the current situation of Beijing - private vehicles increased rapidly in recent years and public traffic cannot meet the demand of public transportation. Comparing Beijing with Hong Kong and Tokyo, the report offers a new method in air pollution control from the perspective on of establishing Beijing to be a “mega-city”. Beijing is not only the capital of China, but also the culture and economic centre of China. Large permanent residents and floating population make it possible for Beijing to become a “mega-city”. At the same time, the inter-city railway and highway make it possible that some cities to become satellite cities of Beijing. According to the traffic in Beijing, the report proposes measures to in “mega-city”, including optimizing urban layout, controlling the use of private cars, improving public travel efficiency and reducing exhaust emissions. In brief, establishing Beijing to be a “mega-city” so as to reduce the per capital carbon emissions is a method to solve the problem of air pollution.

“Let the naming and shaming begin”(CNN). The Chinese government and the population of the nation are getting their index fingers ready and their cackling voices warmed up for prime aversive conditioning for the results of the list of the ten most air-polluted cities on China. This list is to be followed up each and every month, along with a parallel list of the best environmentally conscious cities in the nation, in the hopes that national humiliation will push positive environmental action. Recent studies by the Asian Development Bank show that the worst air quality levels in recorded history and seven of the world’s top ten most air-polluted cities were in China. The central government is taking measures to stop approving coal-fired power plants in heavily polluted industrial areas, as well as proposing a national blueprint to lower the concentration of harmful particles in the air, (most are caused by the burning of coal), by at least 10% in years to come. The government of China can only do so much especially when posed with the fundamental challenge of motivating a large mass of people, gaining their support, and calling them to action. They find the simple complexity in finding a strong enough incentive to bend the will and change the behavior of 1.238 billion people and even create instill a nationalist pride in each, to put a cause for their efforts. Therefore, as a political body whose dire need to push their agenda and better the lives their people, resort to shame as an incentive applying to both economic and social aspects to achieve a healthier state.…

Over the past month I have been in China, it has been impossible for me to go outside without having a respirator attached to my face. Why? Because of the extreme air pollution that blankets most of China. Because of China's air pollution that has been a constant problem over the past few decades and has been making living in China “uncomfortable”. The air pollution has several effects including declining public health and up to 1.6 million deaths per year. That is about 4383 deaths per day, 1.4 times the number of casualties on 9/11. The reasons for death from air pollution includes lung cancer and breathing difficulties The pollution has been caused from coal burning, tailpipe exhaust, factory pollution, dust, aerosols and waste incineration…

With China’s rapid development, dust and air pollution are prevalent throughout most regions. However, it has become particularly bad in the metropolises of Shanghai and Beijing, where citizens stalk through smog-ridden streets almost daily, armed with only flimsy surgical masks, if anything. This picture has become a common sight in newspapers and online media across the globe, and stands as a warning to other nations of the consequences of rapid expansion and unmonitored air pollution.…

With the exponential growth of technology in the 20th century, certain economic powers have come into being with the beginning of the mass production era. One of these major powers that came along with this revolution is China, the major producer of all goods found in the United States. However, no major industrial power has taken place without causing major harm to the environment we live in (Kahn, Yardly 2007). While rapidly growing air pollution in China brought on by harmful factory production and out dated fueling methods has created an abundance of health inequalities as well as permanent damage to the surrounding ecosystems, the solution to these issues prove difficult to solve. With a communist styled…

What if every day you woke up and when you looked out the window, you couldn’t see a thing? In some cities in China there is so much smog, you can’t see a thing! Air pollution is one of the worst problems in China. Benxi, an industrial town in northeastern China, is so polluted that once, a satellite couldn’t take a picture of it because of the smog. A poll taken before the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics said that 74 percent of the Chinese people said that they were concerned about air pollution. China needs to stop pollution-and fast!…

In the last three decades, the Chinese people have drastically transformed their country from a once poverty stricken country into an economic powerhouse. However, the impact this growth has had on their environment is quite appalling. The Republic of China’s rapid economic growth has negatively affected the countries’ environmental status. Increased emissions from factories and an over-reliance on coal are ruining China’s air and water. The impact on the health of China’s population will be devastating, in human and financial terms, and will undo the Chinese “economic miracle” if not addressed.…

The pollution in China is at the worst it has ever been in years. Since the beginning of this year, the levels of air pollution in Beijing have been dangerously high, with thick clouds of smog chasing people indoors, disrupting air travel, and affecting the health of millions. The two weeks in the middle of January of this year have been especially bad; at one point the pollution level measured 40 times recommended safety levels (China’s Toxic Sky). Authorities are taking short-term measures to combat the current crisis, shutting down some factories and limiting government auto usage. However, long-term solutions seem distant, as China 's use of coal continues to rise, and the government remains slow to acknowledge and address the problems. On November 13th 2012, I traveled to China with 14 other students from Champlain College. I have chosen this topic because while I was traveling in China, the air quality was my biggest concern and had bothered me the whole trip. I had only traveled for a week. The citizens of Beijing have been and will live in those conditions their whole lives. This creates serious health problems with women, children and the unborn babies. For a pregnant women to be breathing in this quality of air is basically like her smoking constantly throughout her pregnancy. This causes major health problems for future generations. This is all an effect from the combination of China’s extraordinary economic growth, rapid industrialization and urbanization but the blame is also shared with inadequate investment in basic water supply and treatment.…

Consider fuel economy and CO2 emission rates. Widely acknowledged public utility vehicles such as the Toyota Coaster, Mitsubishi Coaster, and Hyundai County evidently have more efficient fuel consumption and CO2 output than our beloved jeepneys. Respectively, the average fuel consumption are 18.44 km/l, 14.79 km/l, 18.31km/l (Mills, 2013) compared to our king of the road’s average of 5.53km/l - 6 km/l (Napalang & Vergel, 2010, p.4), while the carbon output on the average is 174.8 g/km, 210 g/km, 171.9 g/km (Mills) with our jeepneys belching it big-time at 601 CO2 g/km emission rates (Napalang & Vergel, p.2).…
