This was a predictable result. Communication plays a tremendous role in any job you are in. Whether it is engineering, teaching, or health care. Communicating makes things run more smoothly and it lets the other person know what is going on. It is also not about talking, it is about how you present yourself to others and listening. Body language is important, because people do actually judge you on your appearance. I have talked to other athletic trainers, and they all said that one of the biggest things to be good at is listening. This applies to everyone, it helps to know what you have listened to so that you have the information and know what you need to do next. One of the things that sounded surprising to me was that athletes actually go see athletic trainers and talk about non-injury topics. An example from the interview is, “The psychological issues that people have come to me with, are usually not as much injury related as much life things. Sometimes the life stuff triumphs the injury stuff, if you have both, those can definitely compound. I think a lot more of it there is always a mental issue. All of us have something going on, and so if you can destigmatize that and let them know it is okay they come in and talk to you. I’ve had athletes come talk to me about a lot of things”. Communication is the most important one because the way you interact with athletes can either help them or hurt them psychologically. Individualizing is important because not everyone is the same, so each treatment has to be customized to increase the athlete’s benefits. It important to keep track of the athlete’s progress and let them know about it, because it encourages them that they actually are getting better and there is hope. Psychology is knowing the athlete, because the athletic trainer sees them every day and should know what they like and do not like. Overall I have gotten a better idea of how to help athletes through their injuries psychologically.
