Athlete: Michael Jordan, Jackie Robinson, And Muhammad Ali

Who is an Athlete?

Michael Jordan, Jackie Robinson, and Muhammad Ali are some of the greatest athletes of their sport. Dribbling a ball, swinging a bat, and boxing alone has not made them athletes. An athlete is most commonly described as a person who is proficient in sports and other forms of physical exercise. Even though this definition may be true it vaguely describes who athletes are. Athletes are not just people who play sports. It takes certain qualities to be an athlete. Athletes are people who are determined, committed, aggressive, competitive, strong, in good physical condition, and goal setters. An athlete is a person who is determined. Once they set their mind on something, they do not give up until they achieve the goal. They are committed people who want to succeed. Muhammad Ali once said, “I hated every minute of training, but I said, “Don’t quit, suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion”.” Athletes go through the pain and conditioning of training to be the best. They do not give up; they stick out the tough to obtain the good. Like Michael Jordan who was cut from his high school basketball team and Jackie Robinson who overcame race barriers, athletes are not stopped by defeat. They commit their entire lives to their sport. They compete in their games. If an athlete is not competitive, he/she does not desire the win or glory they will receive from competing. A competitive athlete goes and puts their one hundred and ten percent into their game. Another trait athletes have is aggression. Aggression helps football players make plays, hockey players deflect goals, basketball players to steal the ball or to apply good pressure. This type of aggression is not designed to hurt or harm anyone. Good aggression is key to an athlete’s ability to win. A nonaggressive athlete loses the competitive edge and possibly the determination needed to

Non-athletes seemed to have distinct individual factors that affected their relationship with athletic qualities, with the most common characteristic being a lack of drive towards a competitive nature. Athletes were “people” and non-athletes were “a person”, which is interesting because not all athletes are the same, just like not all non-athletes are the…

According to Elgin Baylor, a NBA player in the Naismith Hall of Fame, “If you look up greatness in the dictionary, it will say Michael Jordan.” Michael Jordan and Lebron James both boast legendary NBA careers. They are considered to be the top two basketball players of all-time. Both wear the famous number 23. Jordan’s brand accounted for 8% of Nike’s revenue in 2015. Lebron’s brand only accounted for .4%. Jordan played three years at the University of North Carolina , and Lebron came straight out of high school. Lebron was supposed to be the best player to ever play the game. The real question is, has he dethroned Michael from the top spot? Not quite. Michael Jordan is a superior basketball player than Lebron James, or King James.…

I also saw a darker side of people saying that athletes develop aggressive traits like bullying and the need to dominate their opponents on and off the field. This relates to the book we read because when Gene lost he felt the want to eliminate his competition so he would be the best and lack competition. Since Gene never beat finny in any sports competition his want to win and destroy the person that beat him built up until gene decided to take away everything finny had in order to get ahead even though finny had done nothing to gene. Sports can be a good thing and a bad thing when I asked my teammates about their motivation most of them said that their motivation was to beat their opponent. Another question I asked my classmates was would you rather be known as a good student or a good athlete, most people said both and only a little said a good student which shows you that most people would rather when I asked my classmates does sports help you in school most of them said yes because it gives them good traits like determination and perseverance and they are good traits to have but sometimes in a bad way like the determination to beat someone and then take it a step farther by hurting them or putting them down with words or…

Their determination exposes them to more experience than the person that decided to give up at the first glance of difficulties. In the world of sports, dealing with loss cannot be avoided. An athlete can do one of two things, after experiencing a setback in sports;, they can either feel bad about themselves and the outcome of the event or they can learn from what happened. Transition Michael Jordan may have been the greatest basketball player to ever live. Though he did not make it there by always succeeding, he was determined to turn his failures into success.…

Athletes tend to be more prone to injury than a non athletic person. If an athlete were to compete on a professional level were the speed of the action is moving faster than a hurricane, that athlete would almost be guaranteed to suffer some sort of injury. Maybe it’s a simple pulled muscle, that athlete would be able to come back and compete again. Let’s say the athlete was not so lucky and got hit be someone so hard it appeared that he got ran over by a semi truck going 65. The athlete would not be able to return back to his or her sport. Now what will the athlete do to make a steady income? If the athlete finished school he or she will have an occupation they will be able to get right into. If the athlete did not finish…

The life of an athlete has changed significantly over the years. Their salaries have increased along with their popularity. But possibly the most considerable change has been in the culture. It seems that every day on ESPN we here about another athlete getting in trouble. Society loves to put athletes up on this metaphorical pedestal, but they love even more to watch them fall off. Of course there are athletes that we can look up to as model citizens, but the group’s image as a whole is most definitely suffering. When it comes to athletes, there is a lot more to it than what is seen on the field. Growing up, sports are used to teach lessons of hard work, discipline, and most of all teamwork. These three attributes are useful on and off the field. But what happens when natural talent allows an individual to succeed without developing these attributes? This individual will prosper without ever learning the true meaning of sport. Natural ability can be a curse to most athletes. They take their talent for granted and do not set goals to become better. Natural talent can only take one so far before their lack of hard work, discipline, and teamwork turns into their downfall. The off-the-field life of an athlete is one of partying, spending absurd amounts of money, and run-ins with the law. The development of this lifestyle evidently begins in college and eventually affects most athletes’ professional careers in a way that usually leads to their demise.…

Athletics is ingrained in the human experience and is an integral part of American culture. Because of that, many of my weekends and after school hours have been dedicated to either watching a game or starting one with the kids in the neighborhood. Athletics runs deep in my family. My great uncle was a professional baseball player and my family, including my father, three brothers and a sister, are all very involved with the various team sports. It’s this immersion into various sporting activities that has led me to the understanding that engaging in athletics has a very positive impact in our lives. Additionally, sports are extremely important in building one’s character through hard work, learning to work with others on a team and by learning how to cope with the joy of winning and the inevitability of losing.…

If children follow the example set by today's athletes, the definition would equal a sore loser. High school sports should be a fun way to physically express yourself as an athlete, but at the same time learn some of life's lessons, like sportsmanship, discipline, and respect. In today's society, winning comes before everything, but if winning requires neglect of good sportsmanship, then nothing is gained in the long run. Sportsmanship matters not only in sports, but also in the rest of our everyday…
