Grammar Error Checklist

Vocabulary o I do not use I, me, my, mine. o I do not use you, your, yours. o I do not use let. o I only use people, human, society, lives, life a few times. o I do not use contractions like can’t, didn’t, don’t. o I do not use slang like guys, cool, awesome. o I use academic vocabulary instead of good, bad, big, small, important. o I have not used the word besides. o I use marry or to get married as the verb form. o I use to have a baby or to give birth (NOT to born a baby). o When I talk about problems, I say experience, encounter, face, or cope with. I do NOT use meet. o I have not used direct translation from my first language or from my electronic translator.

Spelling o I have checked the words image and imagine. o I have checked the words from and form. o I do not use there is or there are. o I have checked the words scared and sacred. o I have put my essay through spell-check on the computer.

Non-count Nouns o I use the word research as a non-count noun. o I use the word evidence as a non-count noun. o I use the word stress as a non-count noun.

Cause and Effect Grammar o I use one cause or one of the causes. (NOT one of cause) o I say cause of NOT cause for. o I do not use cause, reason, why, come from together. Correct: The causes of happiness are internal. Incorrect: The causes of happiness come from internal thoughts.

Correct: The reason that married people are happy is… Correct: The reason for married people’s happiness is… Incorrect: The reason why married people are happy is…
Verbs and Prepositions o I use similar to and different from. o I use take care of or care for. o



References: Johnson (author of quote—you don’t have his book) (1960) (the year of Johnson’s book which you don’t have) argued that...(as cited in Smith, 2003, p.102).this is the book you do have NOTE: only Smith’s book will appear in your Works Cited Page Johnson (1960) argued that...(as cited in Smith, 2003, p.102). “Plagiarism is one of our biggest problems today” (Johnson, P. 1960, as cited in Smith, p., 2006, p. 2l). As another example, the proper in-text citation for a paraphrased passage is: Plagiarism is stealing the works of others ("Plagiarism," 2006).

    Hating or judging without any rhyme or reason, simply because my parents and my uncle said, “Don’t go near him”. Earlier in the novel, Boo Radley is described by the folk of Maycomb as a freak. This gave the children a preconceived impression that he was a frightening phantom that lurked in the Radley Mansion prompting Dill to lead Scout and Jem to mock and conjecture the Radleys through their games. The children’s subconscious prejudice against Boo Radley may have been out of innocence but as Atticus puts it, they were “tormenting” him. Later in the novel, they realised Boo Radley was vastly different from what they heard about him, instead he was someone who wanted to befriend them by gifting them and even saved them when Bob Ewell tried to kill them. This further brings out the injustice of the children’s prejudice as they had already judged Boo negatively, prior to knowing him when actually he was nothing like what the townsfolk told them.
