CCCH 9039 Curing the Chinese: Medicine and Society in Modern China
Assignment 2
Kwok Man Ting (UID: 3035108863) I would like to discuss about people’s attitude toward Western Medicine base on my observation after my visit to Queen Elizabeth Hospital and some references. People nowadays are generally more open and positive towards Western Medicine, but there are still some constraints in practicing due to cultural difference. I am going to explain my opinion on different aspects: public response towards hospital regulations, people’s awareness towards public hygiene and people’s gratitude towards doctors and nurse. Later I will discuss about the social and cultural factors of such change in attitude. To begin with, I would like to talk about public response towards hospital regulations. Different patients are separated into different common rooms, for example, ear, nose and throat, neurosurgery, radiology and imaging, etc. In the common room, patients being separated by curtain are provided a bed. Television is set up for entertainment. Patients can read magazine and smartphone to kill time as well. There are nurses who are responsible for serving meals and taking care of patients. Friends and relatives are not allowed to come in and out of the room freely, but can only visit within the visit hours, which is from noon to 8p.m. In order to prevent unnecessary disruption to other patients each time only two visitors is allowed. Patients are by their gender as well. When doctor was checking on female patient, a nurse was present. In my observation, people were generally willing to comply with the visiting regulation. However, some elderly often requested to leave hospital early and go home. They insisted that they are recovered and there is no need to stay there. This shows that nowadays hospital is no longer regarded as a ‘secret and mysterious place,’ people are more comfortable about receiving treatment at hospital due to comprehensive

My first victim was my mother I explained to her what memory aid was and how you conducted the class experiment on the students in class. My mother is just like me so she was not very thrilled about the fact that she had to remember information in such short notice. I explained to her that she was not being judged. I started the memory test in a very calm setting which was in my mother's room where she was comfortable. I explained to my mother that I was going to give her a deck of cards. In random format she would need to pick out seven cards. Once she selected the seven cards she had one minute to view the cards in the order that they were selected, and then regurgitate them back to me. Reminder my mother is 52 years old and coincidentally she did very well. Now that I know my mother has very good short-term memory. we have to work on long-term memory, because I always have to remind her of things. I only conducted one memory tests with my mother because she was getting kind of aggravated, and for some odd reason she thought I was making her do my homework. My results with my mother was kind of babbling, because usually my mother act like she cannot hear anything you say. The results were actually the other way around proving that my mother was not telling the truth. Conducting this test on my mother has giving me something to hold over her head in proving that she has selective memory.…

With the economic problems, there are still opportunities in the healthcare industry. Patient satisfaction is a plays a key factor of quality of care (Morris, Jahangir, & Sethi, 2013). Without patients, healthcare facilities would have no use. Patient satisfaction is based on the expectations of the patient’s attitude and care. A patient's expectations of a good service could depend on age, gender, illness, his or her attitude toward the problem and the circumstances (Prakash, n.d.). Patients expect their doctors to live up to the expectations to satisfy them. When I am being hospitalized, my personal expectations are respect, care, communication, courtesy, concern, and professionalism.…
