Description of Unit: The unit introduces you to the main UK and worldwide tourist destinations in terms of visitor numbers and income generation and their location. You will look into cultural, social and physical features of those destinations and the issues and trends that affect their popularity, as part of the essential selling skills and knowledge needed by managers within the travel and tourism sector.
Through studying visitor numbers, statistics and other relevant data, you should be more aware of past issues affecting tourism, enabling you to appreciate the impact you can have on a destination and its continued popularity.
To achieve this unit you must:
1) Understand the scope of key UK and worldwide tourist destinations 2) Understand the cultural, social and physical features of tourist destinations 3) Understand how the characteristics of destinations affect their appeal to tourists 4) Understand issues likely to affect the popularity of tourist destinations
You have recently been appointed a job as a destination researcher for the World Tourism Organisation (WTO). As part of your initial training course you are required to complete a number of tasks to prepare you for the job ahead of you.
You will be required to demonstrate your analytical skills through examination of tourism statistics and trends, followed by the completion of in depth research on destination appeal and cultural, social and physical features of tourist destinations. Your final task will allow you to demonstrate your report writing skills, whereby you will analysing issues that affect the popularity of tourist destinations and discussing the potential for responsible tourism.
The WTO would like you to begin your training by demonstrating your analytical skills. You will be required to sit a timed assessment in class where you will use your prior knowledge and research to analyse tourism statistics and trends.
