Support individuals with specific communication needs
Outcome 1
1.1 Explain the importance of meeting an individuals communication needs?
Every individual has the right to communicate in their preferred way. It is important for individuals to be able to communicate as it is an essential part of all relationships whether person or profresonal and is needed in everyday living. As a care worker it is my job to be able to communicate with service users to be able to understand and meet all their needs.
1.2 What is your role and responsibilities in relation to supporting individuals with specific communication needs?
It is my role and responsibility as a care worker to support individuals with communication needs by using their preferred way of communicating, gaining information from care plans etc and assessing their needs. This will allow the individual to express themselves and feel that they are equal to others around them.
1.3 Analyse features of the environment that may help or hinder communication?
Visual Factors
Distance - let the person you are talking to see you, don't stand to far away
Lighting conditions - good/poor
Movements - don't make sudden movements
Distraction - noise levels around you, TV/radio to loud, poeple shouting or talking loudly
Temperature - is it too hot, too cold or just right
1.4 Analyse why a Service-user may use a form of communication that is not based on a formal language system?
You may not share the same language system with the recipient of the communication.
The individual may not be able to speak due to having a medical reason.
The individual may have sufford a stroke and therefore not be able to access their normal language skills.
The form of communication may be behavioural such as body language.
1.5 Identify a range of communication methods and aids to support individuals that you work with
Language - talking, singing
Hearing - sounds, voices, music
Vision - picture cards, word cards, symbols
Sign language
1.6 Describe the potential effects of not meeting a service-user’s communication needs?
By not meeting the communication needs of a service user you could make them feel leftout and isolated. If this was on going it could then make them feel down and depressed, later leading to mental health disabilities putting the service user and others around them at harm.
Outcome 2
2.3 Explain how and when to access information and support about identifying and addressing specific communication needs?
I would gain access to information and support on an individual reading through their care plan and seeing what sort of support they require with day to day living and if they have a preferred way of communicating ie, speaking, sign, picture cards etc. I would access this information each time I was caring for the individual to make sure that nothing in the services user's care or care plan had changed.
Outcome 5
5.1 Identify specialist services relating to communication technology and aids?
You could contact your local Health and Social Care Trust, speech and language therapy services, local authorities and even speak with GP's and schools. By speaking with these organisations you can gain information on communication technology and aids. Types of communication aids could include charts, pictures, symbols, words, electronic voice output devices or specially adapted computers.
5.2 How would you support an individual to use communication technology and aids?
I would support them by making sure that I knew how to use the communication technology/aid correctly and that it was used correctly, as stated in the service users care plan as to not cause the individual or myself any harm.
5.3 Why is it important all communication equipment is set up and working correctly?
It is importanant that all communication equipment is set up and working correctly so that you dont put the service user or yourelf in harm and so that you don't damage the equipment in anyway.

In my role as a support assistant it is my duty to ensure that I work in a person-centred way to support, encourage and promote individuals to live independently. This includes treating them with respect and dignity. I speak clearly and not use any jargons, etc. I identify their preferred method of communication. It would be bad practice to not meet the individual's communication needs. The individual may not receive the correct support or assistance. They will be unable to share their views or concerns, or have a say in what happens to them or express how they feel or what they need. They may become frustrated, angry and isolated. They may also become depressed, feel undervalued and have a low self-esteem.…

If an individual’s communication needs are not met then all aspects of their daily life can be affected such as not being able to communicate you are well and get help. This could be more severe in the case of abuse whereby the individual can’t communicate effectively to alert others if they are being abused and can be vulnerable to abuse. The result could also put others in dangers for example if a person’s communication needs were not met and they discovered a fire they would not be able to report it quickly which would put others in danger.…

Review the range of groups and individuals whose communication needs must be addressed in own job role. There are a wide range of individuals that I communicate with on a daily basis i.e. clients, support workers, mangers, clients parents, gp’s. Which are different to one another for example if I’m communicating with a client I would use their preferred communication method wherever it would be Makaton or pictorials all depending on which is their preferred means of communication. If I was not to use their preferred means of communication this would cause a barrier and possible upset that that individual. When communicating with support workers to carry out a task I would need to talk clear and slowly so that person could understand instructions and always make sure they understand what the task is I am requesting them to do. I am happy to listen to any concerns that the may have or any issues in the work place or problems they may be having in their personal life. I am happy to use and visual or hearing aids if they require that support. When talking to a manager I will show them respect throughout the conversation and not undermine anyone. I use emails on a regular basis to get in formation to people that do not work at the home for example occupional therapists, Physios. But emails can be sometimes be miss read so I will always make sure they can understand it by a possible follow up phonecall.Communication can sometimes be miss read so I try and always make sure everyone can understand.…

There are many ways for people to communicate. These could be for simple and common forms such as, socialising with others and to be able to build a relationship with either family, friends or even the staff within the care environment. Also it is a major part of the SOVA aspect of care in the way that they need to be able to report and raise their concerns to a member of staff to make sure that they are protected and that it is investigated if the individual is willing to pass on their concerns. People will also communicate to be able to reassure themselves or others around them. To be able to share experiences and past activities with others and mainly…
