Assignment 204 Task B
Task B: Research and Account of Abuse

Account No.1: Ashcourt Nursing Home: 81 year old Maria Worroll
Maria Worroll, 81, suffers from Alzheimer's and arthritis, and requires around-the-clock care.
"An elderly woman was physically assaulted by a male carer and mistreated by four others in a care home classed ''excellent'' by the national regulator, the Care Quality Commission. Jane Worroll secretly filmed her mother's room in Ash Court, London, after she noticed bruising on her mother's arms and legs and suspected she was being mistreated. The footage, broadcast for the first time on BBC Panorama, shows care workers feeding Maria Worroll too quickly, manually rolling her over, and hauling her roughly into bed - an action that should have been performed using a hoist.
All five main care workers filmed by Jane Worroll were sacked.
Forest Healthcare, which manages the home, say this was an isolated incident, and that they receive positive feedback on the care in Ash Court, which is subject to "continual improvement." Fiona Phillips reports.
Forest Healthcare has no connection to Forest Care Ltd which operates homes in Hampshire and Surrey." Panorama - Undercover: Elderly Care, Monday 8.30pm, BBC One
The issue of abuse at Ashcourt which was deemed 'excellent' by cqc was raised by a few members of family, then they put in secret cameras to catch these mistreated of service users. The home is mostly to blame for these events as the staff should be trained and observed when complaints are being made. The manager in charge wasnt handling complaints and concerns with staff as the care the service user was getting decreased rapidly. In the video, it shows care staff manual handling a service user that clearly needs some other suppport to assist them to and from places. Overall the failure to monitor service users with less capacity meant they where outed to the whole country, which in the long run can mean serious decline in buisness.

The Catering Services industry has struggled during the past five years. Since 2008-09, a severe economic downturn has led businesses and households to spend less on catered events. Businesses faced with plunging profitability cut back sharply on catered events such as office parties, corporate seminars and product launches, and reduced average spend per head for events that did go ahead. The deteriorating consumer climate led consumers to put off discretionary events and choose to cater events themselves or spend less at a restaurant rather than use the industry 's services.…

Malnutrition is a condition where the body does not receive enough nutrients to function properly. Malnutrition can include under nutrition and over nutrition. A number of different nutrition disorders may arise, depending on which nutrients are under- or over-abundant in the diet. In most of the world, malnutrition is present in the form of under-nutrition, which is caused by a diet lacking adequate calories and protein not enough food, and of poor quality. Nutritional measures could be taken into account by taking in how many calories they consume within a day and how many calories they actually need in proportion to their lifestyle any sporting activities they may participate in. You could then see whether they consume a correct amount of calories or not and provide nutritional guidelines to help a support them in what they should be consuming to have a balanced diet.…

The people who used the service at Winterbourne View did not receive effective, safe and appropriate care, treatment and support that meet their needs and protected their rights. This is because the quality of information recorded within care plans was poor, and was not person-centred. There was a lack of understanding of the complex needs of people and the planning and delivery of care and treatment did not ensure the welfare and safety of people.…

The home has been converted from a barn, surrounded by fields and wildlife. Each service user has their own room with en suite bathrooms, removing the feel of institutional wards of a hospital setting. But the costs of the everyday running, wages and professional specialist services for this group can be expensive to the organisation and the chief executive may not provide the service if it is not seen as a risk to life or essential to that particular service user. Staff wages are low which results in a high staff turn around, low staff moral and staff shortages which effects the quality of care provided. This issue has been raised with the senior management and concluded with the refusal to employ more staff based the belief they have sufficient staff and are providing the required amount of care, according to policies and regulations. However, it could be argued that it is because it will increase the wage bill causing a decrease in the organisations profits. The organisation has to follow the regulations stated in the government white paper 'Valuing People' which has emphasised the importance of the removal institutional living by placing emphasis on the importance of providing the service user with choice (DOH 2001 online). Issues in following this framework often occur in both private and local authority…

The Guardian news paper, (plus other mainstream news papers) made a large report on this that was made public on the internet too. I have learnt to be tolerant and to understand other people’s cultures, to respect beliefs and values of other people. This excited me, and I felt I wanted to find out how much I had learnt from this module and what to apply to my placement. I wanted to find out if the patients had individual rights at these homes. I was keen on observing how the staff cared for the aged, and to see if the standard set by the Care Homes Regulatory Office were being met. I was surprised to find that the department of health has stipulated the National Minimum Standard for the Care homes for Older People. I also felt apprehensive about being excluded by the carers, on the groups of respecting the patient’s private needs, if any. Nevertheless I was also concerned about the new environment of working in hand with the carers who understood what was expected from them. This was a challenge for me I then confirmed my…

She didn't know if was going on until one day she realized it when the nurses would turn off all the lights earlier than supposed to, so that they wouldn't have to take the elderly to the bathroom or change them. Therefore, in the morning, they would have been sleeping in their own feces. After she became aware of this, she quit. I believe that people in our nation are not aware of this abuse. I believe that many people know that it goes on but there are a high number that do not even know of this kind of abuse nor how serious it is and can be. The articles gives a few examples of investigations into nursing home abuse and what they have found. One 83 year old woman was found laying in bed with her body covered in ants and ants going in and out of her mouth. That is disgusting and really sad. I do not understand why anyone could ever let that happen to someone. I believe that we as a nation need to rise the awareness of nursing home crime. Something needs to be done. Some people say that to get good nursing home care is to spend a lot of money, but that is not true. The nursing home that my grandmother worked in was one of the most expensive nursing homes…

The content of the recent Ombudsman’s report on care of the elderly in the NHS was, sadly, not a shock to me. All the scenarios described were similar to incidents I had witnessed or could easily imagine happening. But, contrary to what the report says, I do not believe that it is a universal problem with attitude towards the elderly, but that it is all, directly or indirectly, down to staffing.…
