Aim of Project: To find a reliable source of RGN’s. Also to minimise future recruitment struggles and consequently use less agency nurses.

Objectives of Project:
Understand if, and why there is a shortage of Nurses in the UK
Research different recruitment methods.
Understand the implications of using a recruitment agency.
Understand the implications and process of recruiting Nurses from overseas.

Research Question:
1. Is there a shortage of nurses?
2. If so, why is there a shortage of nurses?
3. How can this shortage be overcome? /What are the short and long term solutions to the nurse shortage?

Background:

I work in two Nursing Homes in Cheshire, hiring approximately 120 staff between them. In my job role as Administrator and Marketing Manager I help with the recruitment of nurses, care assistants, etc. This is usually done through the Governments job portal, which frequently supplies us with enough candidates for interview and eventually, after checks in line with our Employment Procedures, to hire. Unfortunately, this has not been the case recently and I had been tasked with researching new ways to recruit nurses for the Care Homes.

Analysis:

Recently, in our care setting we have found a severe shortage of Nurses. This is not just the case within our setting, but has been reported to be a problem across the UK within Private and Social care homes and also the NHS. This problem has got increasingly worse, so much so that in April 2014 the NHS made it mandatory that all hospitals have to “publish staffing levels on a ward-by-ward basis together with the percentage of shifts meeting safe staffing guidelines.” NHS (2014). This was done in order to find out the extent of the problem and will be continued for the next few years. Not only the NHS have reported Nurse shortages with the Care Industry News stating that there is a “growing crisis which is forcing

    Summary: This article informs the reader of the shortage of nurses. The article mentions, as in the past, nurses are still putting in long hours, caring for more patients, desperately trying to stay on top of things. There is a new nursing shortage, different from the old one. The reasons of the shortage are examined. Fewer people are entering the nursing field, a general dissatisfaction of many issues, and a high burnout rate. The article consists of three main reasons for the shortage, each of which go into detail about a certain issue. The new shortage requires unique solutions that will fix the underlying issues, not just solutions that will help in the short run. The solutions of which that were mentioned was needing stronger, professional work environment, adequate staffing, and salaries and benefits to that equal of their responsibilities. To help combat the shortage, federal and state governments are presenting legislation to improve the working environment and helping to pay nursing tuition.
